‘Screener Season’ is Here, But Where are the Piracy Leaks?

The end of December is a season of gifts, also for movie pirates. The special presents they are anxiously waiting for don't show up under the Christmas tree though, but usually on torrent sites and streaming portals. The question is, will there be any this year?

Pirated copies of the latest Hollywood movies leak all year round, often ripped from DVDs, Blu-rays or online streaming platforms.

Towards the end of the year, however, some real gems appear online in advance of their theatrical debut in what many have dubbed “screener season.”

Screeners are advance copies of recent movies which are generally sent out to critics and awards voters. These high-quality releases are subjected to intense security precautions by the studios, as they are highly sought after by online pirates.

Still, over the years hundreds of these screeners have leaked early. Most people probably remember last year’s spree of high profile screeners released by the Hive-CM8 group. These allegedly came from the talent agency Innovative Artists which was later sued by Warner Bros.

This year, however, things have been quiet on the screener front. While many have been sent off for review, the first have yet to leak to the public. That is, if they ever leak at all.

Looking at recent history, it’s almost unthinkable that no pirated screener copies will appear online. For more than a decade a healthy number have leaked from Hollywood’s own connections.

Below is an overview of the leaks per year, based on data from Oscar piracy watcher Andy Baio. These are only for movies that eventually received an Academy Awards nomination, so the actual number will be even higher.

The data clearly show that the major movie studios have managed to limit the leaks somewhat over the years, thanks to their increased security measures. But they’re far from perfect, as last year’s bump shows.

Although it’s still relatively early, Hollywood will be happy to hear that based on this data it has never taken so long before a screener has leaked online.

In all years that were previously documented the first leaked screener came out before December 16th. This means that today’s absence of 2017 screeners is definitely noteworthy.

That said, the bulk of the leaks are often published late December or in January, so it’s too early to draw any conclusions. Time will tell if there are going to be any presents for pirates this Christmas.

After last December I don't think people who have access to the screeners are going to be so anxious to share them over the internet.  Even during this last year, the majority of the releases that were marked as screeners were fake and were either HDTS or blatant CAMS.  It is too easy to digitally watermark the screeners and be able to track down whose copy was released to the net and then to track who had access to it, just like they did a year ago.

They didn't catch no group that leaked them out  last year the person they caught  was that guy  who worked  in Hollywood for leaking The Hateful Eight .. It dont matter if they leak out or not the movies come out anyway in better quality..  Many DVDSCR  will leak and the Blu-ray  or ITunes will come out a few days latter  that's why i never liked watching pre-retail  there's plenty of stuff to watch tell better comes out.  Only some of them are really good leaks like the ones that good copies want be out tell months  latter

.The only groups that got caught here lately  were from the UK  and they released cams and re encoded  anything that leaked  they were just leechers who done poor releases  Never has one real scene group ever been caught  . Always there are certain ones in P2P that keeps them Internal  and they use to never leak them tell right before retail was fixing too fall some years back.   If they leak they most likely will be tagged NOGRP  and that's not uncommon  and P2P groups do it too themselves re-encoding  these anonymous tagged releases .

I seen screens of one DVDSCR  of a really good movie but they have them  Internal so far only way you have access if you're some trusted person  at some of the private sites.:)

A movie torrent site I frequent has made a rule of not to allow for DVD screeners to be posted this year. Cautiousness seems to be high this year.

Saw the release of the first screener of the season but it isn't being widely disseminated.  Only found it on a couple of sites and not any of the main ones normally used to release them.

Maybe the Movie Companies and Anti Piracy  trolls  got scared the FBI  will bust them for leaking them out .

As far as DVDSCR  p2p groups dont have access to these unless someone on the inside leaks them out. I always suspected  Anti Piracy leaking movies out to try get money from suing downloaders .

There is many titles that leak of worthless movies were never sold anything and they will try to sue downloaders over them and the movie want even be worth the court cost . These B and C Movies i would of waited a year or two  too come out on cable or satellite  on the Movie channels to see. I would never paid  a few bucks to even rent them back in the day man !
