Font Management

About 5 years ago I ran into this huge problem with my fonts in Windows XP SP3. I had just over 1GB of fonts. I had collected these fonts from various installations, collections found on the web, and from free font sites all over. I was collecting these fonts so that I could start to learn how to design various things, and I needed 'artist media' to work with.

I began to notice that it could take up to three minutes to open my 'Fonts' folder and that there seemed to be issues, I started deleting them. ( not recommended ) So, I got it down to about 200 MB, and forgot about collecting fonts as it seemed to be a problem.

As I progressed I found that I could not do without fonts to work with. I began to collect them again and use them for many things, but again I ran into this problem.. it even slowed my Windows Startup time. I began to search for a program that was a well-rounded resources for viewing, managing, and using fonts outside of the normal default way that Windows offers.

I found a few programs...FontExpert 2009 by Proxima Software seemed to be my best found solution for the problem. I have the full version with the Adobe InDesign Plugin, but I have since run across several other programs and just a hand full of topics about the best software for this purpose. Now, I am managing about 760 MB of fonts, and I can use them outside of the windows folder with option to activate and deactivate the file for temporary use.

My question is there a better software to use for this purpose, and relating to the reason(s) I have stated above?

...AND

Why is this software better?

I don't have any specific program in mind.

As for managing fonts, I never forget to remove the check of copy fonts to Fonts folder.

I always put other fonts into another drive.

Well I don't know about the soft you have mentioned but I have been using "FontList" from sometime and it is great, try. Well I don't know it will help you or not but it has been very useful to me. ;)

Looks cool, this would help when trying to use the tiny program window to view your fonts...or select one at a time...I actually have about 1296 fonts installed.. and another 5,000 that aren't....I think it would be a good program for people just looking for a quick solution to view whats installed, but you are right...FontExpert takes care of a few of my issues a little better...especially accessing un-installed fonts and temporarily activating them for use. :)
