The vulnerability enables users with limited rights to get root rights on the system. The cause is a NULL pointer dereference in connection with the initialisation of sockets for rarely used protocols

Not only is it local, it also requires you to have root access.

But Redmond fans sure love to see a security hole in the linux kernel.

If it requires root access then what is the reason to use exploit to GAIN root access ? ;)

To screw around with someones system.

I get your point, but what I am trying to say is that home users won't have to worry about this vulnerability that much.

This is something perhaps system administrators have to worry about, but only if their system is not up-to-date.

Just for the record, this security hole is already plugged in the newest kernel.
