Well first of all, sorry for what has happened, second if you could show me a screenshot of the the error message that would come very handy.

The issue probably has to do with file permissions so if you can unhide the files and use any of these tools to give you a new permission https://www.raymond.cc/blog/easily-take-ownership-and-grant-full-control-permission-with-winownership/.

My advice would be not to use any recovering software as the data is actually there not lost.

One more thing, if you have an antivirus installed check it's log maybe the data is infected and  has been quarantined or deleted(god forbids).

stop scanning/try to fix your drive... use Total Commander to access your data.

see that your drive isn't getting too hot to function... clean or do something to keep it at a temperature below 50 °C while accessing it.

stop getting WD drives... they suck... the only good thing about them is their name.

And that is because you have been running them for over 25 years and currently have over 100 WD drives in use in your home computer systems and have only had one failure in the last 7 years.  Oh, wait a minute, that is me I am talking about.  If you want to talk trash about something then have some data to back it up.  I trust all my data to WD drives.  I have 5 NAS systems all with WD drives, each of my desktop computers have 4 WD drives for data storage, and every laptop I own has at least one WD drive for data storage in place of the DVD drive.  I also have several hundred WD drives in storage that contain data from  1993 to this year and when I need something from one of them I am always able to retrieve it.  Since 1991 I have only had to RMA  5 WD drives that I can recall.  I can't tell you how many Seagate drives I have had fail over the years, especially just after they are out of warranty.  I never used Maxtor, Samsung, IBM, Fujitsu, Matsushita,  or Hitachi drives because they were junk.  I originally used Seagate and WD interchangeably but stopped that about 6 years ago and junked all my seagate drives.
