virge
Helping someone reinstall Win 8.1 os, the install went just fine, now when trying to do the updates for the first time on a clean install, all I see so far for the past two hours is "Checking for Updates..." This doesn't happen on Windows 10, it seems to be occurring on new installs for 7 and 8.1. Normally after 20 mins or so, the update checker reports back with what it found and asks you to select updates to install from there onward. Is there something going on with the update checker? Two hours seems crazy not to get any response back from Microsoft with any listing at all. Anyone have any solutions on this. Keep in mind this is on a clean fresh install. mlauzon
This happened as well when MS was trying to get everyone to upgrade WinXP to 7, WinUpd took forever to do anything, and now the same is happening because MS wants everyone to use Win10. mlauzon
I've tried that too, while it looked like it help, it actually didn't. MS seems to have a software switch in place when it comes to updating, and they flip it on when trying to force people to upgrade to the newest OS. mlauzon
It has nothing to do with giving Windows 10 for free, they did the same thing with WinXP when they were trying to get people to upgrade to Win7.

J.D
Did someone mention above ^ that you install an update KBxxxx as their update server may have changed - there is a post here about it - worked for me . Do a search for it (MS Updates)
vissha
@virge The reason is that old Win Update Clients blocked by Microsoft and can't grab new updates from its servers. Hence, you'd need to install the permanent fix with the Win Update Client included in July '16 Rollups for Win 7/8.1. Please read below threads and articles which will surely help resolve the issues. Please note that the July 2016 Rollups have non-security updates included. For Win 7 there is no other alternative standalone installers/extracted update client. However, for Win 8.1, we have one. Just posted the permanent solution thread for Win 8.1. I've personally tested too. Also Read: For Win 7, install the July '16 Rollup as mentioned by Woody Leonhard(Askwoody / InfoWorld). KB3172605: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3172605 (contains the last Windows Update client for now). for Windows 8.1 you need: KB3173424: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3173424 (pre-requisite).KB3172614: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3172614 (contains the last Windows Update client for now). once both updates are installed, you can connect to internet again, and Windows Update should start to works normally again.
