You may also consider that maybe the device is no more usable cause dead usb devices are also sometimes recognized by the system as raw volumes.

if it has been I/O error you can't do anything
I/O that stands for Input and Output, it has been hardware malfunction, can't enter again the data (Input) and couldn't get out again the data (Output)

that sucks.

good thing really is that i made a backup of it, holy smokes. that would really be depressing. got alot of valuable data in there,

If the USB stick is important I always use

Use ImageUSB to write an image to multiple USB Flash Drives! Designed for use with OSForensics.

a slow but wonderful working freeware tool

Quote

ImageUSB is a free utility which lets you write an image concurrently to multiple USB Flash Drives. Capable of creating exact bit-level copies of USB Flash Drive (UFDs), ImageUSB is an extremely effective tool for the mass duplication of UFDs. ImageUSB also supports writing of an ISO file byte by byte directly to an USB drive (*). ImageUSB can also be used to install OSFClone to a USB Drive for use with PassMark OSForensics™.

Unlike other USB duplication tools, ImageUSB can preserve all unused and slack space during the cloning process, including the Master Boot Record (MBR). ImageUSB can perform flawless mass duplications of all UFD images, including bootable UFDs.

imageUSB includes functionality to Zero a USB Flash Drive. This will replace the contents of the entire drive with 0s. Or alternatively to just Zero the MBR and/or GPT entries that exists on the drive. In addition, imageUSB has the ability to reformat even hard to format drives and reclaim any disk space that may be lost previously.

(*) CD ISO images use a different file systems compared to USB drives. So the direct imaging of ISO9660, Joliet or UDF file system, from a CD, to a USB drive, might not allow the USB drive to funtion in all operating systems. A reformat can recover the drive however.

Warning: Due to the forensic nature of image duplication by ImageUSB, please ensure that you select UFDs with a storage size similar to the image you wish to duplicate. For example, if a 2GB image is copied to an 8GB USB Flash Drive, the drive will only be able to use two out of the eight gigabytes of storage space. In this scenario, users will need to reformat the UFD in order to access the rest of the storage space.

They made good recommendations above.

I'll just add what I know that may help.

1. You're USB is fine but the windows registry aren't!

Really, this could happen? Yep!

Try inserting it to other PC/laptop and do a quick format since you format it already as they advised above.

If this solve your problem and you're USB is now recognize, it means your pc/laptop, where your USB can't be read, must have its OS reinstalled to have a non-problematic windows registry.

Of course, backup all your data, license key (if you use any hehehe), softwares or ask help how to do thisin another topic.

2. You're USB is not recognizable when it is hot or when used for a long time and then having it re-plugged.

This could be a solder problem cause by overheating of your USB during use.

Try to unplug it and do not use it for 3 hours to cool it.

Put it in the freezer? Nope! I never recommend it. You know the contracted and expansion thing might get it worse.

After cooling it and replug, quickly format it and unplug it manually.

Cool it again for 3 hours then try if it can be recognize by your system.

If it can then you still can use this but once its plugged and you need to restart your pc or you need to unplugged your USB you need to cool it again!

3. You're USB firmware is corrupted!

Yap! This happens sometimes especially when your USB is a pirated poor copy no brand-USB (china-made).

If you're in the Philippines you might bought it in CDR King store or similar and the brand is, of course, CDR king some funny name;

That is an ODM china-made USB (the no brand here is that it is ODM, you can put any name you want!),

The only solution to this is to find the right firmware for your USB and flash it.

But in my experience, for more than 10 USB that I tried to fixed with this kind of problem, only one is successful and it's moody.

The firmware just randomly gets corrupted again.

If this is the kind of trouble you're having then it is pretty useless.

Goodluck! May the USB (force) still be with you! (star wars)

If something is not working and it's an hardware problem, before throwing it away, I would always try to check it's connections and if possible, open it.

This is not a guessing game.

I recommend you to do my advise on case #1 first above, then case #2 before doing case #3.

But I leave it to you, you have to do it on your own and try to read and follow the instruction on this page carefully!

The full guide of Best USB flash drive repair software

That is a good site, I bet when you see how long the instructions are you will just throw your USB. :lmao:Or not!

(I recommend you to do method # 3 first! Go skip to there below)

There are three different method to fix the USB but all instructions in #1 and #2 methods can be simplified to this below

(remove all USB first)

1. Download ChipGenuis, check for virus!

2. Run ChipGenuis

3. This can be skipped if Chip Vendor and Part-Number is known using ChipGenuis

4. Search for the controller chip in flashboot.ru or search for the flash drive repair software in the net. (This is where #1 and #2 differs)  :pos:

(The hardest part if you don't know Chip Vendor and Part-Number or no match is found. You will hate china-made here!)

5. Download the software/firmware utility, check for virus and run it. :showoff:

The #3 method, which I recommend you to do it first.

You thought that will be easy.

Wait til you get home and tried it. hehehe! :hehe:

It is not a guarantee that will work.

You still need to see which Chip Vendor is a match for your USB. :doctor:

Recover disk generator tool allows to you to fix most of corrupted flash drives. It support the following flash drive controller chip vendors :

OTI 2168
OTI 6228
0151 - Silicon Integrated Systems Corp
5151 - SanDisk

if that is not found, using ChipGenuis to know it, then you need to go back to method #1 and #2. :tehe:

the force is with me. i can feel it. :troll:

pretty sure scenario #1 isnt the culprit. tried it in a newly formatted windows 10.

scenario #2 could be one of the reason since i left my flash drive plugged for several hours in a USB hub. then thats when it got corrupted... but!

i believe its scenario #3 a corrupted firmware. since its only plugged in a USB hub and sometimes the hub doesnt get enough jedi juice, also i remembered i plugged a phone whilst my flash drive is also plugged could that have somehow fudge up my flash drive?

Scenario #3 could be the culprit then, the phone draws too much power it could have made some damage to the controller chip of the USB disk.

There is a probability the USB disk is unrepairable but there is also the probability that only the USB disk firmware got corrupted.

Just try method #3 first.

method #1 and #2 is found in my post above that contains this link

CDR King products are low quality... that is why they are 'dirt 'cheap... You get what you pay for...

If these things catch on fire while tethered to you PC may cause more damage like the USB port or worst the motherboard

Invest in better quality media if you value your data

@ThisPC666 I almost forget this: Do not plug your phone in a hub that is shared by some other devices. It will not only get damage due to it draws too much power but it can also cause fire or electrical malfunction.
