We want to introduce you to our new searX setup:

https://www.perfectpixel.de/searx

searX is a meta-searchengine that is able to fetch search results from about 70 different search engines, hiding your identity to the search engines. Think of it as a search proxy.

Why use searX?

  • More versatile results than just using Google
  • Your IP is not visible to the search engines
  • You receive no tracking cookie from the search engines
  • Search engines can't store your search history

What is special about our instance of searX?

  • Server located in Germany
  • Fast server using 6 cores for searX
  • Server is attached to a fast internet line
  • Server does not log your searches
  • Letsencrypt https
  • Apache which serves the searX instance is configured to anonymize IP-adresses, so neither your searches nor your IPs are being logged. Only the first octet of your IP is being logged to rawly measure international usage of the instance.
  • The IPs are being anonymized with this tool: https://www.privacyfoundation.ch/en/services/anonip.html
  • Your IP adress never leaves the servers RAM, it's never written to HDD.

This is a typical line in the servers apache logs: 89.0.0.0 [13/Nov/2016:12:25:16 +0100] 200

The Apaches LogFormat directive for the searX instance is set to: LogFormat "%h %t %>s" The server logs the anonymized IP, date of request and HTTP-result code.

IPs are being anonymized with this CustomLog directive: CustomLog "|/opt/scripts/anonip.py --ipv4mask 24 --output /var/log/apache2/searx.log"
