Diego T.
Hi all, I just recently purchase a 4tb external hard drive to store my music, pirated movies, porn, pictures and pirated software. I would like to ask, whats the best way to use it for storing my stuff. Should I do a partition or just plug it in and drop all my stuff there? Whats the best way to extend life of this hard drive? This is the one I purchased: https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Portable-External-STEA2000400/dp/B017KE8OG0/ref=s9_cartx_gw_g147_i1_r?_encoding=UTF8&fpl=fresh&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=&pf_rd_r=2T651GTX2D4RKP266XHW&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=b21f7431-0e6c-4207-b08b-cc9492e60b0f&pf_rd_i=desktop&th=
oliverjia
Whatever you do, remember to encrypt the whole drive first, then put your stuff on it.

Pete 12
And dont defragment too much , if you do it will certainly shorten the life-time of your HDD..................... ( my humble experience !)
Allen_Prasetya
Just don't let the extHDD experience a excessive shock from drop or something
JimmySvert
You don't need to partition. Just create encrypted folders and you are good to go. And always have a backup of your data on this HDD (even BD-R backups are good if u cannot afford 2x 2TB 2.5" WD Blue)

Sylence
I would delete my porn if I was you so I wouldn't bother encrypting my whole HDD . Full HD fresh porn always available on torrents or other places. my opinion is don't encrypt your HDD, you gonna regret it when a shock or bad sector or anything anything happens to it and then u need to use recovery software and that's the moment you realize you're f*cked. Personal experience x)

I put vera crypt or bcrypt containers in it so even if it get bad sector which is very unlikely, I can have a chance for recovering encrypted files as well. So, if I understand you, it's better to encrypt a file/container and not a whole partition ?

Why don't you just encrypt your files with good old winrar? It's the safest practice imo. Just don't create solid archives. select encrypt filenames and add at least 25 characters for passwords. You think it's more safe then Axcrypt for exemple ? With encryption, I am not sure about the risk of corruption, may be Winrar is better choice. Don't know if SSD will be more safe to store data (in the future) 'cause they don't have magnetic/mechanic parts. By the way, If u have *.rev files (on any other media) u can recover in case some rar parts get corrupted.
Skunk1966
my experience with Seagate external (and internal) disks is pretty bad so I wouldn't advise using it for permanent storage. 1 day it can still be perfect and the next day it can be dead without warning

Seagate was never a headache for me and my costumers... The only problem I had with hard drive was years ago with a Samsung - one minute the files were there and the next they were gone...
