Israeli_Eagle
Actually... Android is simply a Linux distro and one of the worst. So why no real different alternatives? P.S.: And iPhones are also not really better, is a bad BSD distro...

But you also cannot install in a smartphone and have to buy another one. So no alternative as well. The world should create a smartphone without any OS in ROM, only a basic BIOS. Like a normal PC do it, then we could really decide an OS! Edited September 8, 2016 by Israeli_Eagle

SnakeMasteR
The problem is that there are lots of different hardware's out there and companies rather focus on their own business, like Apple, Google and Microsoft do. Nobody wants to just leave the market to others, if there is profit to be made and mobile pretty much is a premium business with different ecosystems and crapload of patents and licensing. Won't happen anytime soon.
Jogs
Some day we may see that kind of phones. Phones on which we will be able to install software on our own and if required the parts could also be replaced.
