Sanitize or Secure Erase SSDs

I have Crucial M500, they dont have software for erasing SSD.

They have something but it doesn't work!

I've been using parted magic and it takes 15 minutes for 240 GB ssd to get erased.

I am not sure Magic is doing proper job maybe I am wrong.

My Samsung SSD have Samsung magician to do the job under 2 minutes and it cant be used for other manufacturers SSD's!

Any software beside PartedMagic ??

Active Killdisk is what I use to destroy HDD and SSD because it has been proven to make data totally unrecoverable.  It also provides a certificate of destruction which is important in my line of work.  One caveat in erasing an SSD is that programs like this have been known to actually destroy the SSD and make it unusable.  I have never had that happen but I have a friend who has destroyed two.  This doesn't bother us since the drives aren't ours anyway and our employers can afford to replace them.  I mention this just as a warning.

Here is the complete guide from MakeUseOf .

Read here for discussion thread from howtogeek for more info on erasing SSD.

Here is the cruical forum article for secure wipe SSD.

@tanjali In reality, there is nothing which can 100% wipe/erase SSD completely. HDD is slower than SSD which we all knew. But why many still use HDD? This secure erase/wipe is one of the reasons and other reason being HDD lives longer compared to SSD.

Hello,

with one SSD, it's might be enough to just erase the partition ? Or the table partition ?

You can proceed with one software like Gparted and then try to restore the data. That's just an idea because once the data are overwritten (altered, corrupted), it could be hard (or lost).

It might be enough for you because I believe, it's not clear how much you want a secure process ? Maybe you need to clarify (a little) this point. One tool like Ccleaner (etc) has several options.

PS : With one hard drive, I would advice a tool like : HDD Low Level Format. This program also supports flash cards (SD etc) and perhaps SSD ?

There is no real way to erase a hdd or ssd.  You can only make it take longer to recover the data.  Only a good hammer and lots of frustration truly wipes any drive.  lol

I am not paranoid about someone is after me,

even though I have some crackers in my diet,

only would like to get SSD in factory clean state from time to time just for a health of a drive.

I would prefer more something like "ATA Secure erase" to zeroing it because of wear and tear!
