What's happening with CCleaner

Hello everyone. I'm starting this topic since I just got a new ASUS PC with Windows 10 but I got some unexpected behaviour from Win10 after Ccleaner cleanup.

Basically, after setting up the operating system (ms account, cortana, settings and so on), I installed some of my software and removed all the bloatware from ASUS. I rebooted the system and everything was working fine. Final step: "let's clean it up a little more with CCleaner", as I usually do. Result: Cortana links (especially those regarding the settings app) totally broken (when I click them nothing happens), and no possibility of searching into the settings app (nth is displayed). This gets along with other sneaky problems in searching, even if cortana was disabled.

I tried rebuilding the search index, followed some procedures on the web but nothing. I didn't create another account sine it's just  waste of time. I ended up doing a fresh reset which took almost 40 minutes (luckily!) and solved my problem.

Now I have just finished doing everything I described above except removing some dust with CClenaer. I'd like to know if any of you experienced the same problem and how it solved. And what you are currently using to cleanup all the mess left from different softwares without messing up the operating system.

thx

First of all, talk us about what Ccleaner you are using and what were the settings. Before cannot say anything.
CCleaner had been perfectly safe till now.

Sorry I didn't mention it since I thought it was implicit. Latest version, 5.20. All checked except the "Wipe free drive".

Registry cleaners are becoming obsolete with win 10

Funnily enough my problems raised after the "files" cleaning, not the registry cleaning.

Some users have the same problem and complained about it in the piriform's forum : https://forum.piriform.com/?showtopic=44864

So probably i'm not alone. I know the problems sounds quite strange to someone, and I tsounded strange to me as well: I do have 2 other pcs with win10 and ccleaner and no problems at all.

Lost my BITS-service with CCleaner a wile ago, repaired with backup.

You have to be extremely carefull with removing things , especially when using CCEnhancer and the WINAPP2.( !!)

When choosing the wrong things for cleaning , you are " out of business" ............

It is difficult to give you advice, but if You uses default settings, then CCleaner will not threaten you in any way. Yourself is possible to make some wrong choices, but the probability is almost non-existent, that also then is something, that may threaten.
PS. If you have an SSD does not use the Wipe Free Space !!!!
It must not be used then.
So I think, there was something else, but not CCleaner, what caused this problem.

Don't know if it makes any difference but there is a 32 bit and a 64 bit Ccleaner.

I have used ccleaner on Windows 10 with no problems

@Kowalski215: You said you "cleaned the bloatware from ASUS"

Maybe you deleted something wihch is reponsible of your problem

CCleaner detects automatically Your system and runs 64-bit if it is possible. If not, will always run 32-bit version. There is no matter, which one to select, but only in 32-bit system CCleaner64 cannot run. In 64-bit systems runs also 32-bit CCleaner well.

"Cleaning" what you actually don't need to clean with ANY cleaner might result in unexpected problems. So, to start with, excuse me for a slight change in subject, but I feel the ROOT of the issue is the same.

Just yesterday I encountered some unexpected problems wirh Office 10 and Office 16 in my XP and Win 7 Systems. Both cases I used JV16 so it is the main suspect, In both cases the final solution was Reinstall Office.

So, "cleaning" with any cleaner might be dangerous to the the health of your computer.

As for Ccleaner, in the beginnig it was a rather "harmless" app. cleaning what could be cleaned even manually by any moderately expert user but the programmer has been adding more functions, some of them obviously DANGEROUS and may I say, controversial: I mean, not sure they actually might really improve the operation of a computer even if used with care.

Actually my experience it that all these cleanings are esthetic and except maybe defragging, they really won't offer a faster computer and won't repair any real registry issue.

The most dangerous is to live - it always ends in death. But here talked about CCleaner.

Any "cleaning" exceeding the remotion of elementary clutter, mean, those temporal and ultimately useless files which accumulate in a computer, might result in unexpexted problems and, let me insist, MY experience is that they ultimately never  improved the performance of my computers.

I've been using CCleaner as well for many years and never had such a problem except this time. And I've used all the settings I've always used.

Never combined ccleaner with others.

I just removed ASUS Giftbox, Webstorage, WildTangent Games, and McAfee. Everything necessar is still there

I've been using CCleaner for years (Win XP by the way) and the only thing I have noticed about the current version is that it hangs a little during cleaning of cache. I assumed it was because I had always installed the new versions on top of the existing ones so I've been thinking about doing a n uninstall-clean install. I have it at default settings and have never had any other problems.^_^

You can install how You want, always will be removed automatically whole previous version, it means all Ccleaner files will be removed, absolutely everything and then will begin install the new files. CCleaner does not use the registry, does not do any other folders anywhere etc, all is in the installation folder. Thus, there is nothing to remove or to uninstall, or whatever to do.

Only ccleaner.ini and winapp2.ini stays there, if these are used. Even activation files (two files) will be replaced.

So, it means, that CCleaner is today and have been always fully portable, all what it uses, is stored on the same folder.
