humble3d
U.S. Army's Official Humvee Replacement WHY CAN'T THEY PAVE SOME ROADS INSTEAD ?? The U.S. Army has just awarded a $6.75 billion contract to Oshkosh Defense to build 17,000 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles for the Army and Marine Corps. The U.S. Army and Marine Corps have made their final selection for the replacement to the aging Humvee. Meet the new Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, or JTLV, built by Oshkosh Defense. The decision caps off a three-year investigational phase, during which Oshkosh, Lockheed Martin, and AM General (maker of the long-serving Humvee) submitted 22 prototype vehicles each to be subjected to an intensive 14-month competitive test. The $6.75 billion contract awarded to Oshkosh covers production of 17,000 new vehicles. The Army anticipates receiving its first units in 2018, with a procurement period that runs until 2040. The first three years of JLTV production will be low-rate, with an anticipated output of 17,000 vehicles. 5,500 of those vehicles will be earmarked for the Marine Corps, delivered between 2018 and 2022. JLTV design requirements called for a larger, more mechanically reliable, safer vehicle than the Humvee, which has been continually patched and modified to deal with the evolving challenges of global combat. The vehicles will come in two variations, four-passenger combat vehicles and two-seat combat support vehicles, with a maximum weight of 15,639 pounds to enable helicopter transportation, USNI reports. That's where I drive my Vietnam era M151A1 Jeep and my 90s era Humvee (not the crappy civilian model). In case you wonder, I have two large storage rentals, one for each vehicle with enough brand new parts to rebuild both vehicles twice, thanks to the Army Property Disposal Office. And as amazing as it may seem, brand new engines and transmissions still in the factory crates cost about $25 each. Differentials, transfer cases, radiators, wheels, tires were all bought at PDO auction for less than $400 dollars, brand new, never used. Can't wait to get my hands on a JLTV ! Clearly, you are a lot smarter and more gifted than the rest of us... Most of us would not even know where to find those property disposal office giveaways let alone how to assemble the parts... It must be nice... but, I'll never know... Hay! Ma! let's head on down to the retail jeep dealer...
