Mp3tag 2.78

Mp3tag is a powerful and yet easy-to-use tool to edit metadata of common audio formats where it supports ID3v1, ID3v2.3, ID3v2.4, iTunes MP4, WMA, Vorbis Comments and APE Tags. It can rename files based on the tag information, replace characters or words in tags and filenames, import/export tag information, create playlists and more. Mp3tag supports online database lookups from, e.g., Amazon, discogs, or freedb, allowing you to automatically gather proper tags and cover art for your music library.

Thanks to SalaR for the update.

How does this compare with Tag&Rename?

IMO the best tool for the job is tag scanner. And it's free.

Mp3tag's interface is more user-friendly than TagScanner, with simple and clean menus. It's a good choice if you only need to make minor tweaks such as using a consistent album or artist name across a bunch of files. If you're starting from scratch you can search several online databases for album details, but TagScanner offers a wider range, including more non-English databases.

TagScanner's interface is a bit more daunting although, once you know your way around, it's just as useful for tweaking metadata or starting from scratch. It has a built-in media player for previewing your files, whereas Mp3tag relies on an external application such as Windows Media Player.

Both applications have lots of advanced features and support regular expressions, although the advanced features are easier to find in TagScanner's tabbed interface. Both can rewrite file names based on ID3 tags and vice versa, and both can also export playlists as M3U, HTML or CSV files.

I have no personal experience using Tag&Rename so I can't say anything about that program.

I still use Tag and Rename for a select few tasks only. Mp3tag blows the competition away when you investigate the power of grouping your own defined actions as one menu item. One of my custom menu items basically renames tag entries, removes spaces, keeps only the tags I want, cleans up artist names, and around 16 other actions. Mp3tag takes power use to beyond the next dimension  and the forums have many posts where people discuss creating actions for different purposes.  Actions can be logic based, so for example, one of my actions changes the song titles based on if the album is a compilation or not - If a compilation, it will add the -(artist) to the title - this is ONE action of 16 that is triggered by one menu item. It is also pretty useful for normal use, but for power use be prepared to spend a little time to craft your own awesome tagging rules and be prepared to use conditional and regular expression for maximum magic. I do not think i can put into simple words just how powerful mp3tag is, and the funny thing is, when you first look at the ui - it cleverly appears boring, simple, and like it has no power - but that is far from the truth - i guess it does this to not scare users away.

I downloaded a copy of "Pure McCartney" - a compilation. The issue, the uploader, had tagged and made part of each file name, 1 - 60 [give or take]. I don't know why he did not just use each CD in the compilation and tag like 1-15 or whatever. So, I tagged each CD, 1-whatever, by hand. It would have been nice to be able to automate this somehow. I tried the online tagging features of Tag&Rename and for some reason, it could not find the album.

To use tnr for online, i find i sometimes have to edit the search fields and remove stuff for the search to succeed.

Also, with both mp3tag (autonumbering wizard) and tnr you can renumber tracks from xx to xy automatically, and then rename your files based on that number, in fact you can have the rename use that number as the folder name too like this CDxy ;)

Basically, i don't think I will ever find a replacement for what both of these tools can do when teamed up.

So easy with Mp3tag

Mp3tag is the only tag editor I've ever had to use.

TnR

Use "Auto Fill Track #" under the Tools menu or the toolbar button

When there are no results, edit the search box ... I deleted "Pure" and ran the search again with success.

@HandyPAF The only thing i still find easier or better to do in TnR is get tags from filename, rename files into folders (which auto creates those folders too) and auto get track details from external sources.

How do you number the tracks of a CD automatically?

1. With Tag&Rename

2. With MP3Tag?
