Photo Reveals Even Zuckerberg Tapes His Webcam And Microphone For Privacy

What do you do to protect your 'Privacy' and keep yourself safe from potential hackers?

Well, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg just need a bit of tape to cover his laptop webcam and mic jack in order to protect his privacy.

Yes, Zuck also does the same as the FBI Director James Comey.

Zuckerberg posted a photo on Tuesday to celebrate Instagram's 500 Million monthly user milestone, but the picture end up revealing about another security measure he takes to ensure that nobody is spying on him – and it's surprisingly simple.

Some eagle-eyed observers quickly noticed that the MacBook Pro on Zuckerberg's desk in the background of the image has the tape covering not only the webcam, but also the laptop's dual microphones.

While some tried to argue that it was not Zuckerberg's desk, Gizmodo pointed out that Zuckerberg has posted videos, live streams and images from there before, so it seems like a safe assumption.

So, Zuckerberg joins FBI director James Comey and NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, who admitted that they tape their webcams.

Although some called this move paranoid, taping up your webcam is a simple and excellent precaution that cost nothing and has appeared many times in the past.

Keeping aside the controversies over Zuck's move, tapping your laptop's webcam is a good take away for you to adopt, because we know the ability of spy agencies, including the FBI and NSA (National Security Agency), to turn on webcam to spy on targets.

Edward Snowden leaks revealed Optic Nerve - the NSA's project to capture webcam images every five minutes from random Yahoo users. In just 6 months, 1.8 Million users' images were captured and stored on the government servers in 2008.

However, putting a tape over your webcam would not stop hackers or government spying agencies from recording your voice, but, at least, this would prevent them watching or capturing your live visual feeds.

He should tape his mouth, too.

Real worthwhile comment.  I really learned a lot about you.  You have nothing worthwhile to share. (That would be like me making the comment "You should cut off your fingers.:P")

Taping the webcam and microphone is an excellent idea, something that should be done as a matter of course.  Starting about 7 years ago we went a step farther and physically disconnect all cameras and microphones before the laptops are issued to users. Had a user several years ago, who came in one morning and said she was sitting in bed the night before on her personal laptop and all of a sudden her screen locked with a picture of her looking at the computer and a ransom request to unlock it.  That was validation of our security procedure and why they should implement it at home.  I liked it better when those items were actually optional on a laptop and you could save money by not having them installed.  The only unknown is how far does one go in securing their systems to which I reply you do everything you can possibly do and then start looking for more ways to secure it.  When you stop thinking about security is when you become most vulnerable.  Most entities that have been hacked didn't have that occur because they had no security but because they thought that once they applied security they never had to worry about it again, but it is something that has to be looked at every day.  You can tell an organizations attention level to security by the size of the security sub-department in their IT infrastructure.  Our security department is larger that any other two combined.

How effective is microphone tape? I've got my webcam covered with some sliding plastic so you can open/close it. All I currently have is some shitty software solution for microphone that says when it gets enabled (that malware would just disable easily).

i was asking me the same question, maybe he is scared someone plugs in some invisible microphone???

Put tape over the tiny mic hole to keep crud out of it and making your voice sound muffled or like loose teeth rattles.  Mic seems to work fine with tape over it. Cortana surely hears it well.    But then again with win10 the speakers might be acting as mic's when not playing tunes.

Why go to all this trouble?  it sounds over kill too me ..If you're using a laptop that has a mic built in you should be able to disable it from "Recording Devices.".

Actually these two persons already done what you have said above but still not belief, disable or something like that maybe not working properly. :P

Because of that they used tape to solve that situation.

Spoiler

Actually I have used this method too, some time ago, that time just try to learn about RAT :P

1. I use OS X, there's no mic disable short of disabling the input level, which probably is the same thing.

2. Any app and/or malware can revert your software based settings. Nobody can hack what is physically disabled/blocked.

1. I find it funny these two people who are so paranoid about there mic and cam are  people who are responsible for doing it .

2. Yes its the same thing

http://osxdaily.com/2010/06/25/disable-the-internal-microphone-on-your-mac/

3. If you got malware you got way more problems than you're cam or mic to worry about  . :)

We may soon see devices with mechanical switches to turn off cameras, mics and speakers.

One thing that everyone forgets. PCs and laptops are not always with us, but our mobile phones are and they too have all the three components. Don't take them to you bedrooms. :tooth:

Tape for the cam. Pliers for the Mic. And I pull out the installed wifi adapter. Have a handfull of cheap USBs I can plug in.

Not a good idea if you use Skype.

;)

Just in case, I'll keep the last comment about Skype in mind. At least no one can Skype you.
