p.s-

One prob/bug seen in this vlc from version 2.2.1 onwards....

while taking video screenshot from vlc player the dimensions are not of exact size as of the video files

ex- if its 680x360 vid resolution the screenshot will be taken as 680x380.

I thought to put the question in their forum but, vlc forums registration not working,,

https://forum.videolan.org/ucp.php?mode=register

No route found for "GET /ucp.php" lol

VLC has been growing, may I say, bloating, by incorportaing more and more codecs to multimedia formats you never even herd about. OK, this is the price we pay for using it: must recognize, a free and fine applicaton.

But I don't want it to be my DEFAULT player for ALL my multimedia files! So, the detail I really didn't like; it hijackecked ALL video and audio formats and icons. While for most of experimented users this is not really a big deal, presume that many computer users might find really annoying that their favourite MP3 or video player has been replaced by VLC. If it has any option to select default formats, it's not obiovus: I haven't seen it

To modify the default player for any file is not big deal, I'm sure you won't have any problem but for those who may have some doubts, all they should do is OPEN WITH and select their default player. Even if I like VLC, bloated as it might look, I wouldn't be happy to keep it as my audio player. To modify the icon might be more tricky. Sometimes this option doesn't appear in Windows Explorer or even if selected, the "hijacker's" icon continues apearing even after a restart and resetting the icon cache might be the fastest way.

That's a good thing though,  every version comes out  though i test it and  i always find my other players can out perform it on newer video stuffs like h265 etc.  It may be ok for stuff like this if you have some monster gaming pc with DX 12 . For Average PCs it only performs good on stuff that its performed good on for many years but it's not so great for cpu intense  video rendering  . So i never really use it  because i use a player that works good on everything and try to stick with it.  I always keep spares around in case i have problems with some file . :)

Excuse me but I really have no idea what do you mean and what's the use of those 2 samll exe files. In any case I don't mena to change VLC's native icon but those of my audio files, using icons associated to my audio player, an operation which should be direct using Windows Explorer.

Good to know that VLC did forsee that some users might not be happy with it hijacking default files. Actually in most cases there is no problem to change file assotiations using Windows Explorer. As I wrote, it's just an annoyng detail and most serious applicatons have an explicit option at installation time

in windows 8.1 always the file associations panel popups and lets you chose i dont think xp have this  but it should be on the installer not to chose file association and keep  it the way they was everytime i update potplayer i just uncheck file associations and they stay the same i have a portable with no file associations on windows of vlc but i have it installed on  Linux witch file associations are done by right clicking the file and choosing a player.

File association might be an option on the installer but I believe, quite purpusefully, in VLC it's not explicit, mean user must click some selection else it proceeds installing and hijacking ALL the files.  Of course, if user complains, they may tell you: it's there but you didn't see it. File association panel as managed by Windows 8.1 looks an interesting and simple feature, as you correctly point out, not present in XP.

Will windows 10 have it hid were you have go in change it. Most people install there favorite apps and want the them too  associate with it  but with audio vs video players  we dont want this so we have to be careful about how we install them . So windows 10 users have trouble geting many of there apps too associate and they have too force change there defaults in Windows settings :)

Maybe it depends on your settings. For example, my hotkey customizations were wiped. Do you use those?  Also, audio volume normalization was changed, subtitle color changed back to white....  Which settings do you have that weren't changed?

Does anyone know of a way (via an add-on, I guess) to get VLC to show video progress in its taskbar icon. You know, where if you're 50% of the way through, the icon is half green, or whatever. Every single other player has this feature.
