annualpurge
It's my first time having a 'testing' environment as I only used Sandboxie before. About VMWare, should I keep the system up to date or only install the ones that the software that I install needs?
draww
it depends. if your testing doesn't require updated OS then skip it. you may also disable the virtual network adapter to block internet access for more secure environment.

But I actually download everything in the VM just so I can keep my original machine from the possible adwares.

I use VMs to test everything. Before I stopped installing all of Microsoft's bullshit updates I would test them in a VM before installing them on a production system. If I am testing software then updates were not essential for that VM. Matter of fact I would create a VM and then back it up so I could just copy it back over after testing something and have a fresh VM to work with. There was never a problem that a system update was not installed either in Windows 7 or 8.1.

But are you seriously saying that you create a single VM for a single purpose, recycle it, then clone the said VM again?
donaddams
or What I do is go to disk utilities and then click on advanced and change mode to nonpersistent and any changes to the disk will be discarded when you power off the VM. also I keep my VM's as clean installs and updated with no software or any thing installed. I create a VM, for example Windows 7 SP1 X64, and after i finish installing windows into it I back up that VM. Then after I use it to test something I take the backup and copy it over the used VM and thus have a fresh VM to use for my next test. I also use VMs to test bootable ISO files such as the various utilities using WinPE or Linux. I don't use cloning software I just copy the subfolders under VMWare and Virtualbox VMs directories to my NAS and whenever I create a new VM I copy that subfolder to the backup. vibranium
VMs are like crash-test dummies. Use and abuse them. Make as many copies as you need.

Can you teach me how to clone a VM? What I want to achieve is: - Install Win 7 Pro 64bit. - Use Win7Loader by Daz. - Update it to the maximum. - Update drivers. - Install the necessary programs and do my tweaks. And then I want to clone that so I can have my VM of choice anytime I want to. I just really don't know how to perform what I wanted to be done. That is also what i did with my own setup with sandboxie side by side too for testing purposes

I don't understand the point of copy/pasting the VM when the easiest thing to do would be just take snapshot and restore them whenever you want. Very easy and fast. This would however require VMWare workstation version.
