Here is my problem :

A friend asked me to repair her desktop - it didn't  boot. The problem was one RAM . I decided also to reinstall Windows and upgrade the RAM memory. The MB has 2 slots for DDR3 (max. 1333MHz) and 4 slots for DDR2 (max. 1066MHz). On ASRock site I have seen that the MB admits max.4GB DDR 3 or max.16GB DDR2 .

So what would be better - 2x2gb ddr3 1333mhz or 4x2gb ddr2 800mhz (you must not forget the costs ...) . The PC will be used for playing some games and normal browsing the internet , e-mail , messenger , skype ..

12/04/2016 update -> problem solved : bought 4x2GB DDR2 800MHz .

Both are now older spec (esp. DDR2) and should be cheap if you look around.  Use DDR3 if you can swing the extra couple $$$.

One of the RAM-s is 2GB DDR3 1333MHz and is stil functional - so my question was plain and simple : the desktop will work better adding another 2GB DDR3 or changing the RAM-s with 4x2GB DDR2 800MHz ?

If it's a DDR3 MB, then use DDR3 memory.  It'll be cheaper.

DDR2 is long forgotten story now. It's DDR4 time. Opt for DDR3 if you have no support for DDR4.

I would say more RAM is better than less RAM even if it runs at a lower frequency. Such technicalities are really the finer details, when considering the total RAM available to your system. Also, unless they are technically minded, most people would prefer 8GB of RAM to 4GB any day, and won't even be able to tell whether it is DDR2 or DDR3, let alone the 800MHz versus 1333MHz arguments...

Do your friend a favour. She will be very pleased to have double the RAM and her system will reflect the upgrade.

;)

I doubt it only supports 2x2GB DDR3, 2x4GB should work, as a model with an inferior chipset (G41C-GS) support that.

This thread was started right after testing 2x4GB DDR3 1333MHz - as you , I couldn`t believe that this MB supports only max. 2x2GB DDR3 ...

(I updated last year the MB to the latest bios vers. 1.90)

That`s what I did today - I bought 4x2GB DDR2 800MHz and reseted bios (the system reflected 8GB RAM installed and 3.19GB usable) - now the PC has 8GB RAM usable .

Thank you all for your advices  B) .
