try to go to Device Manager and uninstall the network card :

Then, launch a scan to allow Windows to reinstall the network card.

Hi asf,

Actually, you have no IP address configured.

IP address like 169.254.xxx.xxx is an APIPA address. It's an old way for old system o communicate and it was again in Windows System.

So, I recommend you don't be in this mode. You will have some problem with.

Please, set your IP configuration on 2 computers manually :

Go here :

2016-03-18_133649.thumb.png.aba21d85c25e

And set IP configuration like :

  • PC1
    • IP : 192.168.0.1
    • MASK : 255.255.255.0
    • GATEWAY : NULL
    • DNS1/DNS2 : NULL
  • PC2
    • IP : 192.168.0.2
    • MASK : 255.255.255.0
    • GATEWAY : NULL
    • DNS1/DNS2 : NULL

After, that, we can continue. This is the first mandatory step.

I repeat, if ping PC1 -> PC2 and ping PC2 -> PC1 don't work, you cannot continue.

I'm setting the IP for PC1 but it jumps right back to unset :s

very strange. first time I see it.

Maybe it's VMware which disturb. can you remove virtual NIC from VMWare to be sure the issue does not come from VMWare ?

It's the same problem on PC2 ?

just question, which windows version have you ? WIndows 10 standard or Pro ?

If you have Pro, I suggest you to uninstall VMWare and deploy Hyper-V. This is integrated into the system and is free to use.

With it, I will be more efficient to help you because I know Hyper-V more than VMWare.

Let me know what you will do.

Yes, the goal is to eliminate element which can disturb your pc.

You will bring back like you have made the first time. Go to virtual network manager.

Ok, that's your choice. So assume issues you have with.

I don't understand how you can create vm, want to communicate with other, do some network configuration in specific scenario .... without network notion.

Initiate virtualization require to understand network topology and to know what you do.

IP, DNS, DHCP, NAT, ROUTING, GATEWAY, ... is the basic of all into network.

I suggest you to document you, well understand what you do and what you want to do, and what result you intend to have.

I can try to help you, everybody can help you, but your problem seems coming from a basic mismatch network configuration.

Kindly regards.

I assume networking is not easy, and after more than 10 years of practice every day, i'm so far to know everything, but i know what i know and where are my limits.

Good luck in your training.
