Setting up Basic network

asf

Recommended Posts

Hi there

I am no newbie to computers and software, but there is one part that i never really touched, that is networking, and i think the time has come that i should know at-least the basics.

So i would like to ask our community, please help me master this.

What i have:

  • 2 PC's
  • 1 VM (that is on one of the 2 PC's i have)
  • 1 Netgear ADSL2+ Modem Router DGN2200v2

What i want to accomplish:

  1. Set up a basic private network, without internet access, that the 2 PC's are within. Accomplished
  2. Be able to share files between all the systems in the network. Accomplished
  3. Be able to share specific folders with specific users of specific systems. Only able when connected to a server.
  4. Be able to connect a VM to the network.

Side notes:

  • Both computers are connected to the internet via USB modems and i don't plan on changing the way they are connected to the internet.
  • if the VM makes it complicated then i would just skip it.
  • the network should have anything to do with the internet connection of the computers.

What i already did/tried :

  • Connected both computers to the router = An unidentified public network, but with sharing functionality, but unlimited sharing (no specific users to specific folders)

Thanks Millions in advance.

This will give you some more idea of it.

Basically you need to right click a folder or a drive > Sharing > Advanced Sharing > Share this folder > Add Share name > Select the Share name > Permissions. You can manage permissions from there. While adding users from Permissions, you can also add users from another location, which is another PC in this case.

I'm not an expert in networking either. But this is what I have learned recently or so.

Thanks for that, but that is only how to share, but what about setting up the network that it should be a normal private network and not an unidentified network, and also how do i add the other computers that are on the network on this list, 2016-03-13_202046.png.425714ed781b66eeed 2016-03-13_202032.png.a4cd4af33d43ba7b36 so that i should be able to set the settings for specific users.

Thanks

Again, I am a bit inexperienced in this. Have you tried creating a Homegroup. The reason I did not mention Homegroup earlier is because it limits sharing to only the Libraries folders and it's kinda buggy for me. Maybe it can help you in it. As it kinda connects computers in the local network.

Or maybe it's not possible to add a network user, as per the last post here.

  1. I don't want homegroup, as i wan't to share just specific things, and not the complete libraries.
  2. even if i wanted homegroup i'm unable to set it up, as for some unknown reason the network is unidentified and set to public...
  3. Thanks for that link, so for a conclusion, i won't be able to set permissions for specific users and computers, without a server :sadwalk:

So what i want to figure out right now is why the network is unidentified, and how to fix it.

Could someone please help.

Thanks

Well, I personally do not care about sharing Libraries but I am more concerned about other folders. :P Maybe, maybe you can still control sharing of Libraries even when you have joined it.

To change network to private, try this or this.

Actually, even I'm trying to find ways to add network users, but I never have been able to do so.

I know how to change the location of the network, but what i want to know is why is the network unidentified in the first place? :notworthy:

Maybe there is an option to select Public or Private when you create a network connection, or maybe, it depends on the type of connection you have created which does not give these options or so.

I see. I'm not sure myself. Someone gave a fix for it here. See the last post on it. It can actually be anything else too.

A little googling gives you hundreds of links for your problem but this page seems to cover it all.

Thanks for the help until here, but it's not finished.

Right now what i have is a network between the two PC's using the router.

What i still want to be able to do is,

  1. connect a VM to the network
  2. be able to share with specific users, and as we saw that is impossible without a server so i thought of a solution,
  3. if i'm able to add a VM to the network, i could just create a virtual server and use it (i just threw a word that i have no clue how to do it)

Problems that i have right now.

  1. When i'm connected to the network, i'm unable to use the internet, this means i'm still connected but when i enter the browser i get a massage that DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET .
  2. Also why don't i have the notwork in the connections tab in Connection settings? as seen in the provided screenshots

Thanks for all the help.

what about your IP configuration ?

When you have several NIC connected, you MUST have only 1 gateway specified.

The gateway represent the next network equipment that you must to access to other network.

The message DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET .seems to be a wrong DNS configuration.

To go to Internet, you need to have a gateway on the Internet interface AND ip address of DNS servers used to resolve domain name.

If not, ERROR.

The message unidentified network provide because this NIC has no IP configuration and is Limited mode. this is normal.

You must have something like this :

NIC1 : Internet

IP mode : DHCP (IP/MASK/Gateway/DNS are specified automatically by DHCP server, your router)

NIC2 : Home netwok (it's an example)

IP : 192.168.0.1

MASK : 255.255.255.0

GATEWAY : NONE

DNS1 : if you have, IP address of your internal DNS server

Sorry but i didn't understand exactly what you meant.

What i want is,

  1. Connect to a private network via ethernet/wifi
  2. Connect to the internet via mobile broadband.

Why is this normal? why can't i have a network that is not connected to the internet, that the computer sees as a normal network?

can you dump here your network configuration ?

This is fundamental.

I repeat, if your NIC does not have any IP configuration set (manually or by DHCP), the network appears as limited.

That's by design in windows.

okay ...

  • Run CMD
  • Execute following command
ipconfig /all > C:\TMP\dump.txt

Then :

  • Run POWERSHELL
  • Execute following command
gip -Detailed > C:\TMP\dump2.txt

Then, copy/paste on this topic

ok it seems you have only the HUAWEI Mobile Connect connected and the ip configuration set manually (by you or by a tiers software)

Are you using a software to connect to internet ? This connection is connected trough USB, right ?

Here what windows understand :

NetProfile.NetworkCategory : Private
NetProfile.IPv6Connectivity : NoTraffic
NetProfile.IPv4Connectivity : Internet

this means this network is considered as private and has Internet access.

Can you dump the routing configuration with CMD :

route print

Then paste here.

To share connection between Virtual Machine and your HUAWEI Mobile Connect  you need to share the connection.

On the network connections panel :

  • right click on the HUAWEI Mobile Connect
  • Select Properties
  • Go to Share tab
  • Check the first checkbox
  • Select the network card which need to have internet

Regards.

This is what i have understand of your configuration you want :

Drawing1.thumb.jpg.fe39f227c2a37c0b5598e

Is it right ?

into VMWare, what type of network have you created ?

bridge ? NAT ?

if you have another computer plugged on your netgear, your computer must be plugged to 2 networks

  • The first is Internet trough USB
  • The second is the local network trough Ethernet

Yup you have got it nearly right, i made two fixes.

56ebdd3634bde_networksetup.thumb.jpg.610

  1. I want that the VM should be accessible to the whole network, not only to PC 1
  2. PC 2 connects to the internet also via modem.

Indeed.

Ok, your problem is the VMWare NIC config.

You must be in BRIDGE mode VMWare Bridge mode

In HOST ONLY (VMWare HostOnly), the VM can only communicate with other PC that are connected to the HostOnly vNIC. In your case, PC1 and VM.

Change the mode to BRIDGE and the VM will be in the same network than all computers connected to DGN2200.

Here a link explaining how to.

The end is near :)

But if i put it in bridge mode it will be connected to the internet, how could i bridge it only to the ethernet NIC?

Also how do i fix the unidentified network problem? (as i'm unable to share now)

Thanks

Question : is you DGN2200 is DHCP server ?

If yes, it will send to VM the IP configuration. But if the DGN2200 is not connected to internet himself and does not play as a router, VM will will not be connected to Internet.
