Slysoft Popular Blu-Ray Ripper Shuts Down Following Legal Pressure

The Antigua-based software company SlySoft has shut down its website and ceased sales of the popular Blu-ray ripping software AnyDVD. The action comes several days after a group of Hollywood studios and technology partners asked the U.S. Government to intervene.

Earlier this month AACS LA, the decryption licensing outfit founded by a group of movie studios and technology partners including Warner Bros, Disney, Microsoft and Intel, reminded the U.S. Government about the unauthorized activities of SlySoft.

SlySoft is known for selling various copyright protection circumvention tools including the popular AnyDVD software, of which it sold tens of thousands of copies over the years.

In 2014 AACS-LA won a court case against the software manufacturer in Antigua, where a local court found SlySoft owner Giancarla Bettini guilty of six charges under the 2003 Copyright Act and ordered him to pay a fine of $5,000 per offense. Failure to pay would result in six months in jail for each offense.

However, despite the win for AACS not much changed. SlySoft’s owner immediately filed an appeal which effectively put the convictions on hold. Meanwhile, AnyDVD remained widely available.

This changed yesterday when the site suddenly went blank as the domain’s main nameservers were removed. Initially it was unclear what triggered the downtime, but a few hours ago SlySoft put up a brief statement confirming an early Myce report that legal problems are the cause.

“Due to recent regulatory requirements we have had to cease all activities relating to SlySoft Inc. We wish to thank our loyal customers/clients for their patronage over the years,” the message of the site’s homepage reads.

While there’s no confirmation on the exact reason for the sudden shutdown, it’s not unlikely that AACS-LA’s pressure to the United States Trade Representative had a significant impact.

In its request the licensing company asks the Government to place Antigua on its copyright Priority Watch List, effectively escalating it into an “international incident”.

“Circumvention through programs such as SlySoft’s AnyDVD HD is a source for widespread, large-scale and commercial copyright infringement by users located in the United States, as well as Antigua & Barbuda, and many other countries,” AACS wrote (pdf).

“Such circumvention also harms the legitimate consumer electronics and information technology companies that build compliant content playback devices that ‘play by the rules’.”

With or without an intervention from the U.S. Government, it’s clear that after more than a decade the legal pressure became too much for SlySoft and its owner. Whether the software will remain offline indefinitely or if it will perhaps reappear under a new label has yet to be seen.

What's the betting Hollywood studios next on there list is gonna be DVDFab

It will probably be ... But I doubt that Hollywood studios are able to achieve the same success ...
Pressing a small country, susceptible to sanctions is one thing ...
Here we have a one-way street.
They no longer will deal with "British" islands in the Americas, but with an Asian giant called China, with which US have business relations, etc ...
We have a two-way street in this case ...
As they say: "we must be more diplomatic in this case. "

Hollywood needs to change its business model or join Kodak.  Kodak invented the digital camera but choose not to use it since its core business was making film.

Hi there,

Actually I do own many US (region A/1) Blu-rays. Since I'm located in Germany (region B/2) it is nearly impossible for me to watch them without having AnyDVD installed on my PC.

So I bought AnyDVD HD lifetime long ago and using PowerDVD with it now. Really sad about updates, which we - users, won't get anymore.

Hmm... Just for admins: since the Slysoft links to the applications on our fp aren't working anymore because of the shutdown, please upload AnyDVD + Co latest version to some filehoster and change the links on fp. Or remove Slysoft applications from fp, your choice (though I prefer only link changing)...

I'm really glad I bought that license long ago. It saved me big problems and I have all Slysoft applications on external drive. Also as a reminder: with genuine license those applications (incl. AnyDVD HD) are still working fine. Maybe on discs with future protections AnyDVD would not run properly, but right now I'm more than satisfied, after all it works. However I don't want to purchase anything after shutdown.

Use the HD key posted by Pete 12! --- If you want have access to slysoft data base for bluray disc's (servers online for a undefined time)follow this steps-> from slysoft developer (I use it in win7 and it works):

According to the same developer the OPD servers are currently still up. They can be taken offline without any warning but also might stay online for a while. Because the DNS entries are removed AnyDVD currently can’t reach them, but this can be solved by modifying your ‘hosts file’.

This can be done by starting Notepad as administrator. To do so, right-click the Notepad icon and select ‘Run as Administrator’. When Notepad has started open the ‘hosts file’ by navigating to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc.

(if there is no hosts entry create one with notepad: after that you will have a hosts.txt file. Delete .txt and save)

Then add to that file the following line: [IP address of the key server] key.slysoft.com---> Ip is 188.165.210.62.

If this will not work add following lines to hosts file and save--->

144.76.238.143 h5.slysoft.com
95.211.9.142 lw.slysoft.com
188.165.210.62 ovh3.slysoft.com

DVDs: All DVDs should continue work. OPD is only used to speed up things, it is optional.
HD-DVDs: All work.
Blu-Ray AACS: AnyDVD contains data for roughly 130000 discs, these will continue to work. Discs not included in AnyDVD will need the OPD. OPD results will be cached locally, if you copy the cache, you can move it to another PC.
Blu-Ray BD+, 20th Century Fox: Recent discs (1-2 years?) need OPD. Older titles work. OPD results will be cached locally, if you copy the cache, you can move it to another PC.
Blu-Ray Java protection (mostly Lionsgate): Recent discs (1 year?) need OPD. Older titles work. OPD results are not cached.
Blu-ray cinavia: Will continue to work with current players & software.

OK guys. According to this post you have to modify hosts to access the database. Easily done with my patcher.
