Software Piracy Hurts Linux Adoption, Research Finds

New research suggests that software piracy has a detrimental effect on the adoption of Linux desktop operating systems. Piracy is one of the reasons why Windows has been able to maintain its dominant market position, making open source alternatives "forgotten victims" of copyright infringement.

It’s no secret that the Windows operating system is one of the most widely pirated pieces of software in the world.

Microsoft is not happy with this fact as it costs the company millions in lost revenue, but new research suggests that Linux adoption is being hurt as well.

New findings published by Norwegian economics researcher Arne Rogde Gramstad show that software piracy significantly decreases the adoption of desktop Linux distributions.

In a paper titled “Software Piracy and Linux Adoption” Gramstad examines the relationship between local software piracy rates (based on BSA’s data) and the use of Linux as a desktop operating system, while controlling for potentially interfering factors such as the gross domestic product per capita and local anti-piracy efforts.

This results in a model which predicts that more people would use Linux if software piracy in general was less prevalent in a country.

“I find that an increase in the piracy rate by 1% in a country is expected reduce the user share of Linux by around 0.5%. Although there is some level of uncertainty on the exact estimate, the direction is negative with a high level of statistical certainty,” Gramstad explains to TorrentFreak.

This means that if all piracy was to disappear the number of Linux users would increase by 50%. While that’s an impressive number, the relative impact is modest. In most countries Linux is used by roughly 1% of desktop users, which would increase to 1.5%.

It does bring up an interesting issue though, as it suggests that Microsoft’s dominant position is actually reinforced through piracy.

“I think the results highlight that there are costs to software piracy besides losses to corporate profits,” Gramstad tells TF

“For operating systems, piracy has contributed to Windows’ dominant position, which in effect has undermined competition from open-source alternatives like Linux.”

More research is needed to see how other external factors may influence the relationship between piracy and Linux adoption, but Gramstad is confident that the direction of the results is stable.

While it’s doubtful that Microsoft is going to start encouraging piracy, the results show that the effect of software piracy is not always as straightforward as one would think.

"It's easier for our software to compete with Linux when there's piracy than when there's not." -Bill Gates, Fortune Magazine, July 17 2007

That's dumbest thing I've heard since two bullets rule.

I think they're right. Think if there was no way windows could be pirated, then pirates would only have two options, buy windows or install linux. And as we all know pirates would never buy that $#!t, only options left would be rapid adoption of linux.

Back before i came around the scene . Most all Warez  was very underground  there were a few shady  crack sites  direct download  but warez on filehost  was unheard  of and there was no bittorrent we used IRC,  fast track and IM  to share files.  I sold legit stuff on the internet for a profit just so i could buy the software I wanted plus I  worked  too.  I say around 2005 is when most warez forums  appeared . Nsane is one the oldest still around.  Piracy has became so common now days people dont really need forums any more like they use too with p2p and  blogs. People  who dont have money to buy things there ether going to use something free or use warez it dont take  a  genius  to figure it out even Microsoft is  having a hard time selling Windows  anymore . They went from you buying 10 year rentware to giving it free and trying to profit from data harvesting .  I dont think  much things to do with PC sells very good anymore  , but a few exceptions like  VPNs  and Netfilx  do. Welcome to the age of were you give up you're private info for profit in the name of freeware.   :)

Nonsense. Linux adoption is hurt because Linux just sucks.

- If you are a gamer, you can't have Linux

- If you prefer to use GUI more than spending time in a console you can't use Linux

- If you prefer standardized anything, you can't use Linux

- If you want to actually install drivers without fucking spinning in circles, you can't use Linux

- Also, Linux will overtake Windows this year!

Spoken like a true windows pirate that never used Linux.

1. I didn't buy my PC to game i have a console to game. But they are many games that work for Linux  .

2.  I can make my GUI  to look any way i want in a few minutes.  Most distros come with plenty  of software in there packages that dont call home like windows and just like windows if you want anything not incl. You have to install it but they have tons of stuff you can install from the software manger or you can use 3rd party repos

3. If you prefer to use  free programs that dont require cracks and money you use Linux .

4. On the Distros i use i can install 3rd party drivers  by going to the driver manger  and installing them and then installing one thing through the terminal to get Hardware alteration.

5 Linux  will never take over windows because there's to many people who  are deepened on big money for there technology vs learning new interesting stuff.

Im a pirate and retired  uploader who uses Linux and Windows the forum i came from  we all promoted the use of open source software even the crack team there did   TEAM RESURRECTiON  witch cracked many versions of AnyDVD  and tons of other stuff :P

The real scene dont just release Windows software they release it for Linux  and Mac too. I got bored  with pirating software in 2011 . All all that testing done and making sure every thing worked was cause me to have to reinstall windows .

I have 3 systems and all 3 are running genuine Windows. I've used Linux many times and always gave up because it's so stupendously idiotic. Great for recovering systems (live OS) and stuff, but totally worthless as everyday software/OS. Only good Linux is the Android. But that's basically a proprietary stuff since Google is keeping their hands over it. And that's why it works. Because it's a heavily standardized thing. Unlike 500 trillion forks on PC's out of which none actually works.

Millions of people use Linux  and are happy,  billions of people use Windows and most are not really happy with Windows 10 . Android i dont know nothing about yet because the only O/S for PCs is very new to development and really I'm no fan of Google or smart phones.. I'm old school. My Linux works fine im on it right now typing to you.. i use it to watch videos and listen to music  and most stuff i do on windows i can do on Linux . :P

I have 2 genuine windows systems as well I have windows 7 i rarely use any more and a new Windows 8.1 pc that i use  part of the time  to keep my stuff updated in it.
