which OS for an older PC

Recommended Posts

I have an older PC that I got from the college I went to. It is about 7 yrs old. It has 1GB of memory in it with a 300GB HD. I am wondering which OS would be best to place on it whether it is 7, 8 or 10 or all 3 to get an idea which OS has fewest lags? Can i get some opinions from you guys which 1 you think is best, plz. Also, if u need more info on specs, let me know.

thx

any case u should add at least 1Gb of RAM. DDR2 i think?

i don't like  shitty 10, 7 will be too heavy so my opinion is win 8.1.

Do you know what is the CPU there and what is the operating frequency?(Ie 1.6GHz, 2.1 GHz or maybe something else.) And whether it is a desktop computer or a laptop?

For a more complete answer, you need to post the full specs and also WHAT FUNCTIONS you are using the computer for.

Otherwise, Win 7 Home Basic is a safe bet. [you excluded Linux as a choice]

Then increase the RAM to 4GB (gigabytes) and You can put on a OS wahat You want.

There remains only the question of whether your processor capable to run if to use 64-bit OS. If not, you should put a 32-bit OS (x86). That's all.

PS, if you are a usual home user and you are using an x86 OS, it is sufficient if the CPU is 3GB. But it is also a minimum.

I would recommend windows seven home or professional thirty two bit.  Check to see what the model number of the processor is that can tell us if you should go sixty four bit or not.  You can use windows seven with one gig of ram vista required two gigs windows seven requires one.  If you can add ram do it add as much ram as you can afford and if you can afford it as much ram as the motherboard can take.

You couldn't go wrong running Windows 7 Starter.  It was designed for exactly the type of machine you have.  Otherwise, I would suggest one of the lite linux distros.

How does an SSD improve it? This PC is my torrent, test and porno pc. Not my primary PC.

just for responsiveness, i suppose it's optional depending on budget, definitely get the memory upgrade it will be more snappy, Win7 basic will do depending on how much memory you choose to get, but to make that choice go by what your motherboard spec for max memory it can accept and what current cpu you have.

I'm not a specialist, but I think that SSD is not a particularly good idea.

I recommend to forget this story about batteries, because I'm a physicist. Specialized to electronics.

Windows 10 32-bit is likely the best setup you can have with your computer for now. With 1GB of memory, you're likely to get some Not Responding issues from time to time regardless of which Windows operating system you use.
