For MKV output:

MKVToolnix (MKVMerge) is very easy to use & very efficient. Can insert any type of subs.

You can add as many subs files as you want. Just make sure to rename them accordingly to the given languages. This will be helpful at play time.

A good repository of related programs is videohelp.comThis search can help too

Depends on your tv specs.

if it can read MKV files with embeded subs, it's ok

if subs don't show on your tv then it must be hardcoded. See the links i provided in my 1st post. There are some programs which can do it.

Just remember:

- Using MKVMerge to insert subs >>> lossless. (no re-compression)

- Using other programs to hardcode subs >>> may be lossy. (re-compression = quality loss)

MKVMerge doesn't convert anything!

MKV & MP4 files are just containers The program only muxes all the elemetary streams into one file without recompression

Ex: MPEG + AC3 + SRT = MKV

MKVMerge produce only MKV files. There are other programs whitch can output MP4 files.

See the documentation to have an idea of the supported files (input)
