Java Runtime Environment 8 Update 71/72

Recommended Posts

The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) provides the libraries, the Java Virtual Machine, and other components to run applets and applications written in the Java programming language. In addition, two key deployment technologies are part of the JRE: Java Plug-in, which enables applets to run in popular browsers; and Java Web Start, which deploys standalone applications over a network. Users should install the 32-bit version if they are using 32-bit browsers. If you use both 32-bit and 64-bit browser interchangeably, you need a Java Plug-in for each browser. Hence you will need to install both 32-bit and 64-bit Java respectively.

Thanks to Astron and angel for the update.

JDK 8u72 (BPR builds)
JDK 8u71 (public release)

So, you should use 8u71 as a public release

Both version (8u71 & 8u72) have the same JRE Security Baseline (Full Version String): 1.8.0_71

Note:

Bundled Patch Release (BPR)
BPR builds are available only as commercial offerings to Oracle customers.

Still there is a "JDK 8u72 (public release)"

So I guess an explanation should be added to the head post!;)

Yeah, always like that... a BPR release released as a public release as well but specifically BPR is for a commercial offering for Oracle costumers.

Java SE 8u71 includes important security fixes. Oracle strongly recommends that all Java SE 8 users upgrade to this release.

Java SE 8u72 is a patch-set update, including all of 8u71 plus additional features (described in the release notes).

I think its clear that "Whenever there are 2 relese numbers, choose lower build number". ;)

(recommended by Oracle as well)

I don't consider it at all "given" or clear that the lower release number should be used.  Since I've already installed *_72, is it/should I pull it and install *_71 instead?

no need to uninstall 8u72 cause these two build share the same JRE Security Baseline

JRE Family Version JRE Security Baseline
(Full Version String)
8 1.8.0_71
