My ancient history - I was in the military (communications), and then all communications were made and delivered by teletype (thin pink paper ribbons) and only a small number of comm. facilities were advanced by means automation. I was lucky (unlucky) enough to be witness of one and worked there, the whole layout of the facility was for comm's. and 93% set up as the computer, with only 64K memory and the console had no viewer (monitor) but a ribbon of paper (legal size 8x11) connected as one long piece feeding out of one box (supply) up through the console and down in to another box (receiver) this legal size paper ribbon showed typed instructions on. I guess for later review if something were to go wrong, as a journal, whatever they needed it for.

One could either run or load programs which consisted of A, B, C, D, 1,2,3, levels - needless to say I'd seen levels used (working) down to #1 which made the whole system crawl. There were multiple 9 track mag tape units and one 7 track, a MSU (mass storage unit), a card reader and a card punch, 2 printers (4'H x 5' Sq.) and misc. other things used and updated as time went on - as I said at least 93% of the areas room layout was occupied by the computer, by the way this was not a small room as it had once been the morgue.

It was hard to see then, by myself or other workers there, that this (concept) was to develop into something that would be in most business, and then on to be in most everyone's home. (mind you it wasn't like the first cell phones size reduced to the thin wafers of now) More like a 1,000 to 1,200 sq. ft. space reduced to a PC desktop size you know. Then on wards to fueling the Information "Superhighway" we enjoy today. "Oh those were the days my friends"... Yes you could say I'm older but, it was like last week to me...  :ermm:
