Best would be to burn Ubuntu on a DVD or pen drive and boot from DVD/Pen drive and access your files and take a backup. Then reinstall your windows.

To fix Windows Update: Have you tried the steps in this MS help page?

If you are having trouble with your PC, can you provide more details?

  • Are you able to boot into Windows?
  • Is the PC responding after Login? Any issues like hang, etc?
  • Are you able to access via safe mode?

Also, if you are able to boot into windows successfully, try these.

You can use Windows all in one repair to fix windows update component store to the problem with that is there are many steps to ensure windows all in one repair works properly the good news is all the steps are shown in the program itself (restart your computer in safe mode before you run Windows all in one repair):

http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html

I would use the portable version.  If you decide to run sfc (System file Checker) and you get the error Windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them then use this to fix that:

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-resource-protection-found-corrupt-files

The command they recommend is dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Use that if you run in to problems with sfc.  If you experience problems running dism with the error 0x800f0906 The source files could not be downloaded use this:

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/repair-corrupt-windows-image-error-0x800f0906

Foollow the instructions in that link to fix the error for dism (I had to do this for a friends friend this week and got dism to complete successfully and sfc to complete successfully).  Visssha mentioned the one link that provides the windows update troubleshooter if you run that it should fix your problems if it doesnt try to delete your windows update cache its located in C;\windows\softwaredistribution\download in that download folder delete everything and that should help fix your problem there.   Keep us posted if you experience any additional problems please.

/Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth switches not in Win 7 Dism context (Win 8 and above)

It doesnt look like it matters now looks like truemate fixed it himself he hasnt posted again.  I had forgot about that the command would be dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth that should work.  You can skip dism altogether and go to windows update log and see where the corruption is and replace the files manually go to C:\windows\logs\CBS and double click on CBS.log and go to edit find and type in corrupt and find all the corrupt files and replace them manually time consuming if there are alot of files thats why using dism is better.

I just checked dism on my windows seven and did dism /online /cleanup-image /? and it mentioned scanhealth not restorehealth unless windows seven dism is wrong and I am running dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth on my windows seven with service pack one and it is running that technet document is inaccurate unless it starts to work and gives a error when its done.  Restorehealth doesnt work in windows seven scanhealth does (the command just completed successfully on my windows seven service pack one it wouldnt have run if it worked in windows eight alone).  If you run scanhealth check the directory C:\windows\logs\CBS\checksur.log

Im sorry they didnt work for you did you try everything Windows all in one repair said to do all the information mentioned before you got to the repair tab.  Ill look into why windows update is too slow for you what programs are running in the background.  Do you know what update is the culprit cause if so try uninstalling it.  As for the error eightyseven make sure there are spaces in between each one and checkhealth is not seen in my dism its scanhealth not scan-health one word if it says is not recognized in this context the wrong version of dism or additional repairs are needed (at this point if you have the repair disk then use it and just repair windows seven if not continue).  I tried dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth on mine windows seven with service pack one installed and it worked successfully make sure you have service pack one installed and all updates installed.  I didnt exit out of the command prompt windows when I tried the command I have the same dism version as that command prompt does I have a updated version of the image version that image says seventeen fiveforteen mine is eighteenfoureightynine.

Im sorry your giving up thanks for trying to help out.  A different version number indicates that additional windows updates need to be installed.  If you are deciding to repair windows seven with the installation disk then hopefully that works if not Ill look into your windows update being slow.  What updates did you install before this happened.  A user in microsoft cummunity complained of very slow windows updates and uninstalled two security updates having to do with microsoft dotnet framework four KBtwentyfourseventyeightsixsixtythree and KBtwentyfiveeighteeneightseventy.  There can be a background task making it goes slow to check what windows updates you have installed first.

Since you have made windows update repair and did windows repair via disc, do not worry.

In windows 7, the windows update is slow for first few times. However, it'll be fixed automatically but you need to do as I say below:

  1. Make sure that you are connected to main power and you can keep connected to internet for long hours.
  2. Now, start the PC and change windows update settings to manually download and install. Note: uncheck recommended updates.
  3. Do a check for updates in windows update.
  4. It'll take some hours, let it go. Max: wait for 4-6 hours to complete the checks.
  5. Once it lists the updates, install updates which are required at one go[please check KB numbers to avoid installing updates related to Win 10/telemetry/botched updates].
  6. Now, repeat steps 3 to 5.
  7. Most probably, the next time when you check for update, it'll be almost normal or faster than before.

Yes, I'm sure of it and have experienced in number of newly installed/post repair Windows 7 SP 1 PC and Notebooks and it'll take that long even if you have 20/50/100 Mbps or Gbps broadband.

The reason is just that windows update files and components needs to get updated post repair in order to get the latest updates. Also, MS verifies and collects data to sort the updates for your system. Don't think it is downloading a lot of files, the files d/w in background is so small. However, their servers for these files are too slow. So, this process is done in the background.
