Reefa
The heart-wrenching moment a grieving male kangaroo cradles the head of his lifeless female companion as she reaches for her joey. A GRIEVING male kangaroo grasping on to the dying mother of a nearby joey is not something you see every day while walking your dog. Evan Switzer said he couldn’t believe his eyes when he was walking through his neighbour’s acreage on Monday afternoon at the seaside town of River Heads in Hervey Bay and he saw the male pick up the female. “The kangaroo tried to lift her up and she wouldn’t stand, she’d just fall to the ground. He’d nudge her, stand beside her ... it was a pretty special thing. He was just mourning the loss of his mate. “My dog first alerted me to what was going on ... and I thought ‘this is pretty special’, so I raced home and grabbed my camera. “When I came back, they were still there. The male would have been doing it for an hour or so,” he said. Mr Switzer said kangaroos frequented the area, however they never caused any trouble. “I was about 10m away for most of it. “Other kangaroos would come over, but the buck would keep chasing them away every time,’’ he said. “I went and checked the mother’s pouch and there were no babies inside it. “There were no real visible wounds on her.” A joey stood nearby, softly touching its mother before standing upright by her side in a protective stance. Mr Switzer said his picture had attracted interest from as far afield as England. “It will certainly give us something to talk about at our camera club tonight. “ I’m hoping to enter it into a few awards now.” Evan Switzer said his photographs have been viewed across the world. http://www.news.com.au/technology/science/animals/dying-kangaroos-sad-goodbye-captured-by-hervey-bay-local/news-story/1093d41f649c3a54fb509f84e27879f2
