Credit Card Number Stolen

Knightmare

Recommended Posts

I got a call today from my credit card company, informing me of suspicious activity on my account. Turns out, someone from another state managed to get my CC number, create a duplicate card, and has been using it for dining and shopping. I called my card company back and they said that I would get my money back and that they would send me a new card. This has never really happened to me before so this post is me venting/asking for advice. My last purchase on the card was from Newegg, but I don't want to assume that my number was stolen from there because I also use the card on Amazon. Also--not to sound like a n00b or anything, but I'm wondering if my computer is in danger. Any and all advice is welcome. I'm thinking about narrowing down the guy's location and burning down his new house he is remodeling/building, based on his purchases. ;)

It was from an 800 number. The voice lady said the name of the company when I called back. I missed their first phone call.

Thanks for the warning though! I just checked the number I called and it matched on Google.

Prudent warning Dmog.  Credit Card companies usually text (if they have the info) & call... with urgency; since they're on the hook for the purchases - not you (at least here in US).  Theft happens though and it's never affected my computer.  So many vendors and companies have your credit card number it's barely secure at all.  Everything from gasoline pumps to Amazon, Netflix to the YMCA  happily let 3rd world firms handle the data where they trip over each other stealing the information right-n-left without the slightest regard to you or the company that contracted them to securely handle the data.  My brother-in-law in India showed me how they take pictures of the screens with their phones then sell the data to data crooks hanging around outside.  In Philippines it's even worse with far more imagination going into ways of stealing your data for literally pennies.  Be thankful we've got credit protection here.  It's unnerving when it happens, but in the end you just have to fill out some affidavits and you'll get your money refunded.  The companies security is often pretty good actually - just last week I got called that someone in Texas was buying beer and gift certificates (I live far from Texas) at a grocery store chain where I never shop with my credit card.  Since I don't drink, it struck them as odd so they called.  That's big brother watching your ass in case you think he's not.

I have had this happen twice and both times I received an immediate call from my credit card fraud department, one was even at 3 a.m.  The first time it happened because some business I had done transactions with was hacked.  The credit card company knew about it but I was never informed.  They called me every time I made a charge to a business or place I had not made a charge at before.  The second time I received a letter from a business I had only had one transaction with (obviously one too many) telling me that my data had been stolen.  And about the same time I noticed three charges on my card that were not mine.  I called the credit card company and they stopped my card and issued me a new one.  I have never had to pay any of the fraudulent charges.  Now I don't worry about it since I use a charge card that I get a different number for every transaction and it is only good for that one transaction.  I have even had some businesses that deal with expensive high end computers call me at the number associated with the card to make sure I placed the order.  When we are talking about $12000 to $15000 I appreciate them making that security check, if for no other reason than it prevents another bump in my path of life.

i have had two calls from credit card companies...one legit the other a scam...the scam one asked e to confirm my identity by giving them my card number,,,and that is one thing the real card company is never supposed to do... they have other ways of confirming id

have also had my bank card compromised  and had to make a statement to police and almost had to testify in court but at the last minute the guy changed his plea to guilty

friend paid for a meal at a high end restaurant and the waitress took his card to the till instead of the mobile machine taken to the table...when he got his statement 2 weeks later there was a charge for a one way ticket to France

I have a card similar to your description that I use for online purchases.  Just apply for a card and tell them you want a low limit - I told them $250 as I'm unlikely to buy anything more expensive online from a vendor I've never dealt with before.   Even though one would get their money refunded for improper charges, criminals aren't going far with such a low limit anyway limiting everyone's exposure.  For the rare occasions where I make big purchases like hardware or travel, I use a regular credit card as I trust those companies.  I also put a vicinity warning on my card (not the proper term) wherein if they're any big charges > 50 miles from my zipcode they need to call me for verification.

Company refunded all of my money, and they changed the card number. Glad I got everything solved right away.
