anuraag
Microsoft Windows have already built-in default, free and powerful firewalls, but unfortunately, they lack a simple interface to define own simple rules and can be difficult sometimes to configure them the right way. Windows Firewall Control is a nifty little application which extends the functionality of the Windows Firewall and provides quick access to the most frequent options of Windows Firewall. It runs in the system tray and allows user to control the native firewall easily without having to waste time by navigating to the specific part of the firewall. Windows Firewall Control offers four filtering modes which can be switched with just a mouse click. WFC is free to use, registered users will get the advantage of learning mode which provides notifications for outgoing blocked connections. Thanks to sternog for the update.Download

I personally don't want to. Plus, if the site changes its IP your hosts file is useless since they don't match anymore. So, it involved using an other software to update the hosts file. Who says updating the file says stalling again your connection etc.

Hosts files links web address to IP's (like a mini DNS) so even if the webpage IP changes the webpage will still be blocked. As far as i understood your question above, this is what you wanted, you wanted to block access to some hosts (website) so here you go blocked. Please correct me if i'm wong with my understanding your question, or about the hosts files Thanks

Who says updating the file says stalling again your connection etc. a quote from freedog96150 @ Gizmo's Freeware forum... he said it better than what i wanted to post Quote The hosts file was designed to be name resolver, not really a blocker. It blocks by offering a local IP, normally 127.0.0.1, in response to a domain name look-up request. Blocking an IP at the firewall does just that, blocks. If the drop/deny rule matches an IP those packets are simply dropped or denied and no further action is taken. Since your hosts file is hit only on OUTGOING requests, it is good only for blocking requests heading out of your network or machine. An incoming packet never triggers a look-up to your hosts file, therefore, no blocking occurs. A firewall rule can block in either direction depending on the rule. Here is a neat firewall trick that I use frequently that you cannot do with hosts files. A quick check to an online CIDR/Subnet calculator and you can effectively block entire segments of IP addresses. I use this to block out offending parts of entire countries with a single block rule. As to which is more intensive on CPU or RAM usage...that is debatable. A firewall will normally load rules into RAM and reference rules from RAM while a hosts file will read the file at frequent intervals from top to bottom, caching some of the more visited entries for quicker access. If I had to take an educated guess, I would guess that firewall rules are more needy of resources, but Hosts file access increase latency.
HNB
I love this fantastic tool, and learning to use it. I dont know if its the right place to ask but how to allow incoming request from network? (not internet) As you see if i disable WFC i can ping my PC from network and share a folder. If i activate WFC it blocks sharing folder inside network. Thanks in advance... Whenever u turn a feature on/off , Windows creates/removes rules when needed from the Firewall automatically (or some software that tries to manage rules by itself... some without notifying u or through enabled/disabled settings)... it might be that u have "Secure Rules" checked in WFC and the needed rules are deleted when u enable WFC. Uncheck that feature and try to see if it works. Check the rules after and see for yourself the needed rule in case u'll need it later. Share it too please... i for one want it for future needs ( u never know)

If you check, you will see that "Network discovery" and "File and printer sharing" are both off, and when you set it to on it jumps back to off, but when you turn off your firewall, you are then able to set it to on. the solution is either to go to windows firewall with advance settings, and create a new inbound rule, then choose from predefined rules "Network discovery" and "File and printer sharing" and set as allow. Spoiler Or you could just download the rules from the attached files. HNB
Thanks a lot for the help. These 2 rules had allowed my pc to discover other computers and go through them in the network, but the pc (192.168.3.4) could still not connect to my pc (192.168.1.6) I finally figured it out with this way : 1- Open a cmd on pc 192.168.3.4 and add : ping -t 192.168.1.6 This will continuously ping the pc. 2- Delete all connection logs from WFC on pc 192.168.1.6 and wait 15 seconds then refresh 3- Just right clic on the log and allow the rule. You should rather not create a rule "allow this program" because that allows that process to connect to everything, rather choose "Customize and create" as that takes only the details that are from that blocked entry.
