ASUS Merlin firmware.

Many routers don't support it at all. If yours doesn't you can always use the PIA client but it's much less flexible and I find router level VPN to be more secure and stable.

I was thinking about getting this VPN but since the recent UK privacy laws (i think they operate there) and since they're also US based meh, really don't know anymore.

Laws in US for VPNs are actually less awful than the other side of the world.

Don't trust any of them to keep you hidden from NSA though, as NSA has probably backdoored all the servers anyway.

You're right. Although there are better ones and worst ones among all of this VPN market and we tend to chose the better, obviously. Anyway, the more we read the more doubts we get so it's like you said, we just can't expect on someone else to protect our privacy, maybe creating our own server (VPS) is a better idea.
