RAID1 or JBOD

Recommended Posts

Hello guys,

I've just bought a WD My book duo  http://www.wdc.com/fr/products/products.aspx?id=1260

I was going to use RAID1 but I read that if data got corrupt,if there's bad sector in one drive it is mirrored to the other. Not a good thing.

Is it better to use JBOD and copy the files from one hard drive to the other ?

I'm a newbie for that so any help is much appreciated!

I assume that you want some kind of redundancy because your files are important, and you don't really care much for speed.

If that's your scenario, yes go for RAID1.

If the RAID controller is working properly, the bad sector will be flagged and there will be error correction or mitigation.

Just make sure that before you start putting files on the MyBook, you flash it to the latest firmware from the support website.

JBOD = 2 separate disks.

I don't see why the other one wouldn't carry on working.

Qualification 1 - But it actually depends on the controller. There are some el cheapo controllers that are terrible, especially in the past. Now, not so bad.

Qualification 2 - If the failed drive fails spectacularly, e.g. short-circuit, then all bets are off.

Some useful tips here BUT nothing beats an off-line image backup; refreshed as often as you wouldn't mind re-keying everything since the last image.

Also, consider RAID Level 0 depending on your goals.  Simplier for the uninitiated.

I'll use JBOD and copy the important data from the disk one to the second disk. I'll gain much more space :)

I'll also copy the important data to another external hard drive. Just to be safe.

HDrives are so cheap there's no reason not to have some strategy.  As usual, consistent practices are what makes it work.
