does your older desktop match up for specs to use it... and if it is too far away and you cannot move either the router or the desktop to be closer you can get a repeater....

You can't go wrong with this: TL-WN823N

However you need to realize that all the compact USB adapters do occasionally suffer from range and dropout problems because of the small antenna. The ones with extended antennas are better. For myself, I had a good experience with using a long USB extension cable (about 4 meters) and placing the adapter 4 meters away from the computer, outside the room, to obtain good reception.

Try using a laptop in the desktop's current location, to find out how bad the reception is, before you commit.

Have you considered one of the Alfa usb adaptors?  They have various strength antennas and hookup via usb cable so they are moveable and positionable. Take a look at the Alfa AWUS036H 1000mW Long Range USB WiFi Adapter + Antenna that you can view here

Use this one, it guarantees best signal for long distances. about 25$

2000 mW TX power ;)

Communications is both ways. You need strong transmission and sensitive reception... B)

No sir you don't necessarily need to have strong hardware on both sides in order to have a great signal, it's a bit technical

I think you're talking about the "high-gain antenna" (4dBi omni)? The reception sensitivity and transmission power of the unit are just average.

It could work I suppose, especially if you attach the USB away from the computer (cable/cradle) or swap out the antenna.
