Hi everyone,

With my old laptop (W7 x32) a strange thing happens whenever I watch an encoded H265 (HEVC) movie:

If I use VLC the movie runs jerkily  while with Microsoft's WMP the movie runs smoothly.

I think I have to change some settings in VLC but I don't know how.

Any suggestions?

Thx

I don't know what codec WMP uses to decode H265 but if u can see in the taskbar which one is in use while WMP is working u probably can change this setting in VLC, I use MP Classic so I don't know how to change it, don't know VLC.

The problem is you’re  processor  don’t have enough power . H.265  load roughly doubles compared to H.264.. Direct X 11 or lower is not optimized for H265 ether  so you’re  running  on pure processor  power if you  have a newer processor  with DX 12 some players have been optimized. Try Baka Mplayer  and see if it will play better it uses less process than VLC.

Potplayer has sound boot  all you have too do is turn on  normalization . Out all the players I’ve tired though if you’re  on weak PC  Baka Mplayer uses less process .

Yo can try MPC and see if it works for you it has more settings  than Baka Mplayer but with more  settings means its more bolted  and  causes it to use more process . Baka Mplayer . Bomi , Smplayer  are  all front end players  for mpv (media player)

Test  different players . If VLC  dont work right  I would not recommend Potplayer .

not all containers and muxing modes are equally supported by those different players.
MPC-HC/Be & Potplayer are more efficient than VLC regarding the image quality.
but i have to say that different hardware (processor/video card/monitor) & different players/codecs can reproduce different results.

Try these players  and see if  works

bomi

Baka MPlayer

WMP ?  you have a codec pack installed to play H265 as well?  Do you test players VLC and others without codecs  installed  this could be whats fouling up MPC .

These are  the players I use on Windows  and they work very well  for my PCs because I have HD  processors . But  these players are for windows only so I don’t use them very often any more.  But  I had  a pc before in like 2011  that could not even play x264  good  . VLC  I dislike more than about any player that comes in Linux flavours.  Totem is just as bad or worse than VLC  . :)

I use K-lite Mega codec pack and, yes, I test players without codecs installed with same results.

smplayer-15.11.0 you have suggest seems ok.

Try this video on www.h265files.com

Austrian Alps Time-lapse

5 MB .mkv-File encoded in h265/HEVC

and let me know if it works with your player
