The application still offers support for the discontinued Windows XP

Avast Free Antivirus remains one of the most popular freeware antivirus solutions on the market, so updates are vital to the overall performance of the app, especially given the huge number of users running it on their computers.

And AVAST indeed seems to be up to the task of keeping its software fully up to date, with a new version rolled out this morning bringing not only an important collection of fixes but also several new options for Windows users.

First of all, the new features.

Starting with version 11.1.2245, Avast comes with an option to disable the email signature, which you can find in Settings > General. This is quite an important addition, given the fact that Avast automatically signed outgoing email messages that it scanned, so it was really frustrating, especially for business users, to deliver emails with such a signature.

Additionally, the app now comes with a shortcut for SafeZone browser in the system tray, as well as with icons for scans to make the app a little bit easier to use.

Windows XP improvements

In terms of fixes, the new version of Avast addresses the majority of bugs found in the previous iterations and also includes fixes for problems with browsing on Windows XP, as well as for secureDNS, wrong displayed text in menus, and expired certificates needed for HTTPS scanning.

The application continues to provide support for all Windows versions on the market, and it’s particularly important to note that it still works on Windows XP, which no longer receives support since April 2014. Avast is one of the few apps still offering support for this old Windows release, so updates like the one released this morning definitely come in handy to these users.

Overall, if you’re looking for a freeware antivirus app, download Avast and take it for a spin because, at the moment, this is one of the best security programs on the market coming at no cost.

For years I used the free version and then got a "giveaway" pro version and I can vouch for this software.
