Problems playing web-site videos

Since Firefox 41 I found that many videos (on newspaper or football sites) won't play. I get an error message:-"this browser does not support video playback" or "Could not download the video Error Code:PLAYER_ERR_TIMEOUT".

I thought it was a bug in Firefox that would be sorted out in the next release, but I updated Firefox today to version 42 and the problem persists. Is there an adjustment I can make in settings to fix this?

The following three videos give the error messages in my post above. Until a few weeks ago I could watch any video content without any problems. I really thought it was a Firefox bug. I can watch YouTube videos without a problem, but most newspaper site videos won't play.

I had also updated Flash Player to the latest version, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it just in case the problem was there...but it wasn't that. It's a pity 'cos I like to read the national paper from Scotland and view the varied videos.

If it plays in Internet Explorer and not Firefox... Then it may be that your plugin for Firefox needs updating..

Another cause could be that the plugin-container ( if it exists in this version ) may not be allowed to get through your Firewall.

You can also run firefox.exe -p in a cmd prompt and create another profile.. the start Firefox using that profile to see if it is something in your settings or extension interfering.

Go into Firefox Options > Content > Play DRM content.

Make sure it's enabled and check again.

Go into Firefox Options > Content > Play DRM content.

Make sure it's enabled and check again.

My Firefox 43 Beta 1 (x64-bit) plays embedded videos at nSane despite having the DRM disabled.

@DKT27...In Options>Content> it only offers Pop-ups, Fonts & Colors and Languages.

Last night I went to a thread here on Nsane "Firefox: Privacy related "about:config" Tweaks where Whi51er gave a list of 12 adjustments to improve privacy. I followed the instructions and changed them all except n°3 and n°4. Could it be that one of the changes I made (from "false" to "true" or vice versa) has caused this in some way? That's the only change I made last thing last night.

I looked them over and yet some others in what there were. There is no problem.

@knowledge....I did that and Contents opens (same as when I clicked Options>Contents. But "Contents" only shows 3 sections:- Pop-ups, Fonts & Colors and Languages. It doesn't mention DRM. By the way, I'm using Win XP.

Just a heads up — those concerned about privacy might not want to enable DRM. 8)

I don't think Mozilla offers the DRM option to XP Users.

FWIW, the equivalent about:config entry to disable DRM is:—

("media.gmp-eme-adobe.enabled", false);

@dcs18...thanks, I went into the setting you posted. It was set to "true", so I changed it to "false". I then closed Firefox, opened it again and tried some videos on the newspaper site...they wouldn't play. At first the video screen stays black then there is a little area of color at the bottom of the screen, then the error message as usual.

@knowledge..thank you too. The screenshot you posted is different from what I get...mine only shows Pop-ups, Fonts & Colors and Languages. As dcs18 has pointed out, Win XP doesn't give the option to enable/disable DRM. As you can read above, I used the setting that dcs18 posted, but still the videos refuse to play. It's probably a Flash Player thing (conflict?). I searched on the internet to see if anyone had similar problems, and there were replies about "src" etc...way above my level of understanding lol. Maybe the next Adobe Flash Player update will normalize things. At least I can play YouTube videos.

Thanks to all you guys for your input...I'm starting to convince myself that Win 7 might not be such a bad idea!!! lol :D :D :D
