How to install clone image to new HD?

hi all:

My Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits used a Seagate st9320423asg hard disk almost full.

I bought a Seagatest500420asg new hard disk to replace the old hard disk which I already cloned it to an external Seagate disk.

Also make rescue disk when using Acronis 2014 to cloned the hard disk.

My question:

What is the procedure to clone my old disk to the new one?

I have doubts if I need to installed the new hard disk first, then run the rescue disk and from there chose the option to clone from the old external clone image to the new installed disk?

I am in the right track?

Please let me know if there is a simple other way to do it.

Thanks for the help.

It's amazing the number of people that waste time posting here when they could already have an answer and fix the problem simply by going to the software site or googling the data.

In your case you need to read/watch the following which I found in less than 10 seconds by typing in fewer words than were in the first sentence of your post.

I really searched the Acronis site but the information was not so clear as the one you linked me. Specially first link.

Thanks for the help.

This may help to others who also are cloning a hard disk and replacement it in a laptop computer:

"If you have decided to replace the hard disk of your laptop with a new one, you can use Acronis backup software to do the cloning.

(!) The important point to remember is that you need to put the new drive in the laptop first, and connect the old drive via USB. Only after this you may do the cloning. Otherwise you will not be able to boot from the new cloned drive. As such, hard disk bays cannot be used for target disks. For example, if you have a target hard disk (i.e. the new disk to which you clone, and from which you intend to boot the machine) in a bay, and not physically inside the laptop, the target hard disk will be unbootable after the cloning."

See hole story here:

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally I did cloned, with Acronis True Image 2014, the Seagate 320 gb of my HP dv6-2150us 64 bit, with Windows 7 Home Premium notebook, to an external Seagate 1 tera byte external disk. Also created a rescue disk.

After looking for prices I bought a Seagate 500 gb hard disk.

Now I am trying to clone my external Seagate disk (where I have my cloned image) to the new Seagate new 500 gb installed disk in my computer.

I tried it with Rescue disk 2014 and 2016 (Acronis Bootable WinPE disk). The result is the following message:

Under tools and utilities of the rescue disk and under clone disk option, it says:

Unable to continue

You have only one drive. This program is designated to work with two or more disk drives.

The disk that not see is the new hard drive, bare metals.

I have been searching the internet without a solution to this situation, until now.

Any help to let me proceed to correct this situation is welcome.

Please let me know if some one solved it and how to do it.

Thanks for the help.

If this is a boot disk it would seem that it would need to load USB drivers for communication with the external...

Have you ever booted from the new HD? Is windows installed on that drives, partitioned etc...

I always thought that Acronis was a good software.. but after a few problems.. I noticed that either through error or issues presented when you actually wanted to use it.. there were problems of this sort...at this point however you must proceed with Acronis unless you want to go through the pain of doing it again with another software..

I would try installing windows, the software or whatever it may take to get Acronis to do the job.. They used to have a machine that would clone drives in some computer stores,, made simple work of it but I am unsure about that now.

I have used Windows to make a VHD of my installation but I have never done anything with it... I wanted to move my partition of windows 10.. but it was going to require the backup then the deletion of the partition but I could never get a straight answer if it was possible to put the VHD back into a different partition, and be able to boot from it,, ( dual or triple boot idea here ) I just kept getting told to run it as a VHD or mount it and boot from it but it did not make any sense how I was supposed to go about that... and how it is I was supposed to boot from it.. unless they meant run it from VB...I want to keep at least one more OS to work on the second installation and something I can use all of system resources in... BUT.. I don't think some understand the weeks of work that be involved in setting things up.. and if anyo e takes that personal here.. don't...

I know what it is like to never get a straight answer.... :P I could site even more examples.. a lot of times people only advise on what they know.. unfortunately this is the wrong area to make a mistake.. but at least you have a clone image to work with...

I think that the best way to continue is to connect the new Seagate hard drive using a usb as an external drive and do to it a quick format, then installed it again in the PC and see if doing this Acronis can see it.

Other option I am considering is connect both the new disk and the external disk using usb connection and load Acronis from my installed old hard disk in the computer to copy the cloned image.

What I do not know is if later I installed the new clone disk to the PC and can boot from it. Some say it can be done, others do not.

Please let me know if I am in the right track or maybe ther are better options to me.

Thanks all for the help.

I contacted Seagate support and this is their answer below. I thought Acronis rescue disk do this formatting as part of the rescue service. According to Seagate I need to format the disk first. Is this reasonable or another way to solved a problem that Acronis was suppose to solved? Thanks for the help.

See solution instructions below, from Seagate support.

Thank you for contacting Seagate Support. I understand the drive is not being detected in the Acronis software and will be happy to assist you.

The drive may not be detecting for a couple reasons. Either it is not formatted or it is in an enclosure that cannot be seen by the software. If it is in an enclosure, connect the drive directly to a SATA connection for the drive to detect. If it is not formatted, you can format the drive using the instructions below:

Because this will erase the contents of the drive, I have provided the data recovery disclosure.

Removing, deleting, erasing, formatting or partitioning your drive will permanently destroy your important data (pictures, videos music and documents), which Seagate cannot attempt to recover without cost to you.

Click the "Start" button.

Right Click "Computer".

Select "Manage".

Click "Disk Management".

Select the external drive.

Right click the long box and select "Delete Volume".

Right click on the "Unallocated "area.

Select "New Simple Volume".

Click "Next" until you get to the window that gives you a box to check that says

"Perform a Quick Format". Once that is checked, hit "Next", then "Finish".

When your drive is formatted again it should show up like this example below.

465 GB ( depends on the size of your specific drive)

NTFS

Healthy

New Volume ( name the drive )

Please reply to this email if you require further assistance or give us a call at 1-800-SEAGATE. We are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Central Time.

Regards,

Ted
