HTG Explains: Why Deleted Files Can Be Recovered and How You Can Prevent It

When you a delete a file, it isn’t really erased – it continues existing on your hard drive,

even after you empty it from the Recycle Bin.

This allows you (and other people) to recover files you’ve deleted.

If you’re not careful, this will also allow other people to recover your confidential files,

even if you think you’ve deleted them.

This is a particularly important concern when you’re disposing of a computer or hard drive.

The only way to ensure your data is not recoverable is to totally destroy the drive. I have recovered data from a hard drive that was wiped with the DOD5200 7 pass wipe. I use to blow them up but that is frowned on, so I would shoot them but that isn't convenient, so now I just disassemble them totally and take the platters out to the deepest lake in the area and toss them out of the boat in the middle of the lake. Good luck in finding them.
