Are you getting ads or something on ouo.io/ are something? i dont just using my default list its not been compromised by no malware ad site yet. its still working with adbypasser lol.

this is my setup is this

download and install manually gorhill ublock and umatrix (because if you install from store, you can't get the latest until they update chrome store....) but developer must be enabled.

then basic setup for both is fine with very minor tweak. in gorhill settings tick everything in the one page where it has clear cache etc. but untick the one for whitelisted cookies (this is for convenience of sites like gmail so it doesn't time out cause of cookie being wiped)

ok now i see some ads. but looks to me like these are hosted direct from the 1st party site itself. Not third party advert images. If i'm not mistaken, they can't inject malicious code direct into first party source. it must be from third party image ads, from things like doubleclick etc.... (this is my assumption. I might be wrong....)

These sorts of ads from softexia shown in the slider, when i come across those i use the ublock manual picker to hide. one such site i do that one are....

yes it is cosmetic, but the image risks i'm concerned with are from the third party sources where malware injected are most likely to happen. first party sites getting hacked and images getting injected is also a possibility, but how often does that happen ?

Oh yes, Adblock Plus is more than well-equipped to blocking 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd party images, stylesheets, scripts, etc., etc. — and no, those blocks are not at all cosmetic. ^_^

ok looking into this

this is the typical adblocker plus blocking third party. obviously their blocking based on a list. but whether it's capable of automatically block all third party elements (regardless whether they are flagged on adware lists or not) unless you whitelist like ublock+umatrix combo does, i'm not sure. But if it's the former, i rather prefer the later method which i know ublock+umatrix does.

as for first blocking 1st party images, umatrix seems capable of this. You can toggle to the blue bar to black to make this setting global for all sites.

Anyway see the bit where it shows 1st-party. You can block out images...scripts... etc from working automatically when you first enter the site. Then manually unblock yourself..... But by default they seem to allow 1st party css, images etc from working, in this example see the line where it shows www.huffintonpost.com where there is 1 cookie, 3 images and 1 script.

As for 2nd and 3rd party, their all automatically blocked. Usually if it's adware related it will show a bright red to indicate it's adware based on the filter list you use. Basically so u know what you should not unblock. As for light red, their just autoblock, but not necessarily adware. Those are most likely safe to turn light green so the site can fully work for the elements that load 2nd and 3rd party sources.

Default settings seem to be fine for regular browsing, which is less restrictive and doesn't break site too much initially. Most the time though, you'd need to white list (turn light green) the light red elements for the site to fully work. This setup works fine for most sites, as long as you ALSO avoid visiting dodgy sites as well, or suspicious links :/ why risk it ? If your the type to click anything, then yeah you should re-configure for a more harden setting.

for me using ublock+umatrix i get this

ublock option for this scenario is element picker to cosmetically hide the css. But i don't think it prevent image from even loading onto hdd cache to begin with. For that need to go umatrix and set for that site to default block all images. But even then i don't think it can afterward just keep black listing selectively, while allowing all other first party images on that site to load ....

abp from their documentation link, i couldn't find how their element picker works in this scenario. If anyone can highlight where exactly it talks about that, would be appreciated ^^

By the way, looking at ublock issue list, they mention some short comings in chrome.... which isn't on firefox. so the recent test version has a feature that works on new firefox test build, but not on chrome cause they don't have this feature in order for it to work...

Experimental feature: new cosmetic filter to foil specific inline script tags. Syntax is:

example.com##script:contains(...)

Where ... must be a regular expression like /.../. Caveats of current implementation:

• The filter must apply to a specific hostname or entity. Generic script tag filters will be rejected.
• This works only on Firefox: this feature makes use of the beforescriptexecute event, and this event is not supported on Chromium-based browsers.
  • Starring the related Chromium issue may motivate developers to bring support ofbeforescriptexecute to Chromium.

Not to mention noscript is only on firefox. Noscript has xss and abe protection which ublock/umatrix doesn't.

one user had a good setup. what he did was

- use firefox

- ublock

- umatrix

- noscript (global scripts allowed).

- self destructing cookies

-https everywhere

I think this means is scripts will then be handled by ublock/umatrix, whereas ab/XSS/click-jacking is done by noscript.

tried this setup but some sites broke. like youtube some images don't load, not sure why. can't really pin down which particular setting is doing this :/ I even tried importing working rules from chrome into firefox umatrix, but still the same.

Clean install nothing but Firefox and APB installed with just out the box filters I get the same as Ublock Origin with no cosmetic filters .

The sweet thing about the setup which I use is that no filter subscription is used at all — only my own custom filters & rules (makes Adblock Plus blazing fast.).
