Batu69
“You contacted Microsoft support, it was the first mistake”Back in 2014, when Satya Nadella took over from Steve Ballmer and became the new Microsoft CEO, he promised to revamp the software giant from the ground up, and just by having a look at the things he’s changed in the last 12 months, it’s pretty clear that the software giant has a new vision (we’re not saying that it’s good or bad, it’s just a new vision). But there’s one small side of the business that Nadella actually forgot to look into: Microsoft support. The service that should be there when you need help and that should actually get you in touch with professionals working for Microsoft and having much more experience than you is going from bad to worse. And it’s no secret that, every time you contact Microsoft support, you’re actually connected to an individual who’s either not trained to help you or who puts a thousand questions for the simplest possible thing. But this time, we’ve got an example that is as funny as it is sad. Reddit user Mercarcher has revealed a conversation with a Microsoft support engineer that he had when trying to get help with Windows 10. Here’s some context on this to make sure you read the conversation (which we provide in detail at the end of the article using the screenshots published online by Mercarcher himself). Common problem, unexpected answer The reddit user jumped from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 using the standard upgrade path to benefit from the free offer, but soon after that, he decided to replace his HDD with an SSD. Everything worked smoothly, but once he performed a clean install on his new SSD, Windows 10 failed to activate. Microsoft says that, in order to do a clean install and activate successfully, you first have to complete the upgrade from a previous Windows version to Windows 10 so that the new OS can verify your product key and activate. After that, you can reinstall as many times as you wish. But in case you change your hardware (the license is usually tied to the motherboard, but replacing the HDD could also mess the activation), reactivation might be required, so getting in touch with Microsoft support is needed. Usually, all it takes is using an automated call system that verifies you, but this time, the Windows 10 user had to talk to a real person. And you know what he did? He tricked Microsoft and he might get his Windows 10 license banned. Just as one commenter said, “you contacted Microsoft support, that was the first mistake.” Good God, Microsoft, why is this still happening? straycat19
Why? Let me be the 1001st to clue you in. Any change to hardware changes the HWID and invalidates your license. Under the EULA you upgraded with it also invalidates your previous Windows license. Therefore your only recourse is to buy a new license. Did you really think Microsoft was going to give you something for nothing? Get your wallets out guys and gals. Did anyone here think the reason I am so adamant about not upgrading to Windows 10 was something I pulled out of my ass. I have been using Windows since 1.03 and dealt with Microsoft since 1985, it is still the sleazy, 'we are always right and do no wrong' piece of shit it always was and millions of idoits fall for their ploys with every release of windows. Wake up and quit smoking microsoft dope, keep your Windows 7/8.1, lock it down, don't take any of their updates after Jun 2015, and enjoy your games and other programs. I am. nIGHT
So how are we going to upgrade our pc then if this simple replacement of storage device blocks our activation? :think:Or, do we have to upgrade our hardware to final satisfaction before we upgrade to wind0ws 10? This is crazy! :sI want to upgrade to windows 10 but this kind of thing makes me worry.

CODYQX4
Meanwhile they left KMS totally unchanged in 10. My only experience with "Retail" activation (all my legit licenses were OEM SLIC Laptops) was a legit MSDN Academic key that deactivated for no reason, and rather than suffer the hell that is calling MS support, I installed Daz Loader on it and never looked back. nIGHT
Well, we always upgrade our pc or laptop for a bigger HDD or for a SDD, bigger and faster ram, faster video cards, and whatever we can stuff in it.I'm talking just as an average user and not a gamer. Now I realize that if we upgrade our pc our license will be revoke or block. This I think is the new Marketing strategy of Micros!0ft.We are going to buy a new license again every time we made a major changes to our hardware.Unlike in the old ways as long as you attached the old HDD to the new pc or as long as we can port the OS files to the new HDD/SDD were good to go.How is ATI universal restore of any use now?The OS license we bought is no longer tied to us as consumer but is tied on to our specific pc hardware and that is not good!Good job Micros0ft! Wow! The more greedy you get the more richer you become! What a strategy!

I have to call BS this time and I'm no lover of some of their practices. I've performed literally 1,000s of upgrades and hardware changes and NEVER had a problem adding memory or changing hard drives. In the rare times it does gack when you swap a lot of hardware, all it takes is a call and they quickly & politely fix legitimate installs. edwardecl
I thought the idea was that when you upgraded they gave you a key after installation that would allow you to reinstall as and when you like like a proper key. If that's not the case all people have is a trial version limited to a single install. So they expect you to pay for Windows 10 if you upgrade your hardware, or go back to whatever you had before. Now it all makes sense. I really hope DX12 tanks and the new OpenGL (Vulkan) is used more, fuck being at the mercy of these arseholes.
compgen1534
The key is generic. Not surprised that the moron at Microsoft tech support didn't know that lol.. And as for the guy. Equally a fool for doing that. How can he get windows 10 license banned when it generic key!
mikie
Yamisoft newest SystemInfo pulls out a different key rather than the generic install key.Has anyone tried using that key after having a not activating moment ?I've changed Cpu, and hard drive to SSD with no need to call for activation. Ram too, 4 to 8, 8 to 16gb. Lenovo originally win7 laptop.
