Offline maps/directions for the PC ?

A possibly impossible request:

Does anyone know of a way to get offline maps and/or directions in the PC that is NOT google-based ??

I don't have a GPS or cellular service, but need to check where places are and get directions sometimes.

It would be very nice to have a program that does this, even if it is not always perfectly up to date.

Thanks for any pointers.

I have a gps on my phone and a tomtom gps and occassionally I connect the tomtom to my computer and download offline maps from the tomtom website. You can go to the manufacturers website and see if they have maps to download. I dont know what kinda gps you have..

Way beyond me, thanks:

Maps app on Windows 8/8.1/10. It allows you to download offline maps

In fact, 7 will be the very last thing made by mikr0$0ft that I will ever even try using.

(Linux is better than those, for me, already.)

Just to be as clear as I can in response=>

I also do not buy or use things branded 'apple' (these are mikr0$0ft/wintel now, really...), nor google branded things.

Have been tempted to try this on my Android tablet - but it would likely just lead back to using these same objectionable providers - just on a tiny screen.

There is a false front called something like 'open street maps' that actually is a portal for payware which has a bunch of krappy old applications linked on its site's wiki - another 100% dead end.

Aside of google-ized mapping/directions, all else I have thus far found is=> bing (mikr0$0ft), yahoo (mikr0$0ft), or mapquest (??).

Nothing offline usable for non-phone OSes, sadly, thus far - I remain open to better suggestions.

Also (Thanks) Holmes said:

I have neither an activated cellular phone, nor any GPS.

(If I had either of those it is unlikely I would be asking for pointers towards offline mapping, etc...)

Thanks.

I read it wrong I thought you said you did have a gps my bad. Using mapquest put in the source and the destination get directions and use a paper map you can get at a gastation is about all I can tell you if you dont like apple iphone microsoft bing (I dont blame you for not liking bing I abhor bing). I use google maps all the time..

Thanks Again Holmes.

In this rural area, even if I use the big g - it makes some really hideous mistakes and directs folks to use things that are not passable roads (yes, there's plenty of those here in Vermont, still !!).

MQ is a tiny bit better - but not much.

I try to have offline stuff as much as possible; that way, when the internet ain't working for any reason - no biggie.

No power ?? OK for a while...

Wood stove - check;

Bottled water - check;

Canned/dried food - check;

Ways to cook minus power - check;

Candles - check;

Plenty of warm stuff - check;

Solar charger - check;

Battery powered DVD player - check;

Notebook PC with good battery - check;

Android tablet & phone - check;

Mapping data for directions - nope !!

I confess amazement that this sort of thing is either unknown or non-existent !!

Thanks.
