humble3d
Brain-eating amoeba found in Louisiana drinking water... DHH reports traces of brain-eating amoeba in St. Bernard Parish water system 60-day chlorine burn planned ST. BERNARD PARISH, La. —A brain eating amoeba has, once again, been found in the St. Bernard Parish water system.DHH confirms amoeba in St. Bernard Parish water system Wednesday, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals confirmed the presence of the Naegleria fowleri amoeba in the St. Bernard Parish Water System. A chlorine burn has ended and officials in St. John the Baptist Parish are now waiting for results to confirm that brain-eating amoeba is no longer in the water system. Louisiana State Police confirmed Tuesday that troopers are investigating water quality records in St. John the Baptist Parish after it was discovered Naegleria fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba, was detected in the water supply.More St. John the Baptist Parish officials said the chlorine burn to treat the detection of Naegleria fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba, began Thursday morning. St. John the Baptist Parish officials are expected to update the public on the detection of Naegleria Fowleri that was detected in a part of the parish water supply.More The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals confirmed the potentially deadly parasite Wednesday night after tests. Meraux homeowner Ashley Jolly said she got an alert on her phone about the amoeba late Wednesday night -- in the middle of giving her twin boys a bath. “They like to play in the water. And they just went through swimming lessons and they're learning to blow water in and out of their nose and their mouths,” said Jolly. As part of the state's new public drinking water surveillance program, testing is now done state wide in the summer months -- when fresh water warms and the amoeba can thrive. DHH started conducted these tests after the same type of amoeba was detected in the St. Bernard Parish's water supply in 2013. A 4-year-old boy was infected and died. Officials said tests were done at seven sites. Two sites tested positive for the amoeba. Positive test results came back from a water treatment plant before the water was treated. The other site with positive test results was 948 Angela Street. Officials believe water may have been contaminated there by ground water due to a leak. “Someone hit it. They probably hit it with a car or tractor or lawn mower-never reported it. It pocketed some water, so when they took the sample some of the standing water infiltrated our line. And that's what gave us a positive indication,” said St. Bernard Parish President Dave Peralta. Victor Pastor lives next to the Angela Street sample site in Arabi that tested positive for traces of the amoeba. “Honestly, I'm not really surprised. About once a year we get a letter in the mail that they failed some national standard tests in water and not to worry that they're still in compliance with health and safety,” said Pastor. Peralta said the parish kept up with water standards. He said they just received a $21 million loan to update pipes in the area of the Arabi leak to reduce issues in the future. Meantime, the plan is to conduct a 60-day chlorine burn to make sure any and all remaining amoeba is eliminated. And Peralta insists the water is safe to drink. But Jolly and Pastor said they don't know if they're willing to take any chances. “I know I'm going to purchase extra bottled water-maybe boil water to use here and there for extracurricular activities,” said Jolly. “I had a plan for a slip and slide party for my son's birthday in August, and now I think I'm going to cancel it -- cancel the slip-n-slide and the water host because I don't want to take any chances,” said Pastor. dMog
yea it is scary but it is not like these brain eaters have fins and the ability to hunt down your brain...if it was easy to get this thing into your brain there would be lot of deaths involved, Although these things are not common they do exist quite frequently in water supplies and i know they are in some hot spring source water in place i frequently go to since my youth....and although they treat the water in the pool they cannot promise they have killed them all...and also in the past many people used the natural pools formed outside the public pool that formed on the side of the mountain and there is one cave that used to open to the public too...banff hot springs...
