Windows 10 - failed to upgrade from Win 8.1

I decided to take the plunge and upgrade my Windows 8.1 64 bit to the latest Windows 10 build.

Sadly it didn't and rolled back - at least I got back to the point I started :-)

The error is;

0x80070007 - 0x2000D The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation

Googling gave me a few suggestions.

I have my personal folders redirected to D:\. I restored them to their original location - didn't work

My PC is linked to my Server (2012R2) so I tried from a local account - that didn't help either.

I suspect, but am by no means sure, that it may be down to the PC being linked to the server.

I'm not sure what to try next.

Any suggestions gratefully welcomed.

I had same problem last week and found that it was the graphics driver (AMD) so installed the Windows 10 AMD Graphics driver onto my win 8.1 and it did it . Hope it helps.

The only way is to do a clean installation, it does not matter whether the Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. (NB: do not forget that you have a Microsoft account, and you will not lose anything. Of course, if you yourself will not do anything wrong.)

I'm trying to maintain both my activation as well as all the programs I have installed!

Yes. I did read that Win 10 was very fussy about AMD drivers and when upgrading the Win 10 does not always get the drivers and so fails.

When I installed the drivers it went thru the upgrade no problem. Its best to get all the updated rivers installed first on Win 8.1

Downside of that - I'm not using AMD :-(

OK well there is something on your system that Win 10 can't get its head round,,AND Win 10 10240 is NOT a final RTM there will be a newer version out in next 7 days with most of the bugs ironed out,Hopefully :)

I've twice gone to upgrade to 10 and twice pulled out, downloaded the disks etc, think I will wait another week to see if there is a different build on July 29th !!.Happy upgrades people........

Question: If we use this build to install now and there is a new build next week, will there be updates to upgrade this build to the same spec or would we have to install the new one?.

Win 10 Build 10240 is the latest on the insider program,If you are registered and its activated you will get all the updates.

IF you do a clean install you won't be able to activate UNLESS you upgrade from Win 7 or Win 8/8.1 which as a GENUINE activation key installed.

There is an article about it--- Windows 10 Insider Preview build 10074 will not install
How to: Troubleshoot common Setup and Stop Errors during Windows 10 Installation

Thanks for these links.

Still no luck, if its raining tomorrow I'll try again. If the sun is shining I'll go ride my motorcycle.

Myself won't be upgrading my Win 8.1 till 2016. I will keep on the Win 10 Insider Program till Microsoft have sorted out all the bugs and make it more reliable when adding my programs and devices.Thats why they want Insiders not to opt out of the Win 10 Insider program so they can fix the problems on different systems whats in use by users.

Try loading it unto a usb or burning a dvd with the iso, then running it that way. The dvd drive emulator causes problems here.
