[android] How to backup and instal ROMs with "ROM Manager" app?

Recently, I've come across an app called "ROM Manager". What I know about it is - it can backup the current stock ROM of an android device and instal new ROM.

After downloading the ROM Manager app, I got to know that it needs CWM (ClockWorkMode) recovery tool to work and it downloads compatible CWM for the device. It searched CWM for my device but found nothing. Then it prompted me if I had CWM installed manually. I have no idea whether CWM is installed in my device or not. There is a screenshot below from ROM Manager. Please tell me whether CWM is installed in my device or not?

In "recovery already installed" category, there are two option to select from. See the screenshot below

How to find out which one of the recovery tool is installed in my device (if one of them is already installed by the OEM in my device)?

The best Backup Manager is Titanium Backup Pro - it needs root, though (ROM Manager, too.)

How to find out which one of the recovery tool is installed in my device (if one of them is already installed by the OEM in my device)?

Installation of CWM and TWRP is possible only for rooted Users - in other words, all good things in life are made for a rooted device.

What I was saying is - it needs a device to be rooted to instal CWM but if the CWM is already installed in the kernel by the OEM, then what?

I have heard that during required RMA operation, some vendors flashed the ROM using CWM.

If the cwm was installed by oem, then it should have some restrictions as well. I am not sure if you can just update it with some app. You may need to flash a custom cwm one but

Installation of CWM and TWRP is possible only for rooted Users - in other words, all good things in life are made for a rooted device.

Correct, even the opposite is possible, if you have a unlocked bootloader or s-off as in htc devices you can flash the recovery. ^_^

So there is no way I can backup my current OEM ROM without rooting?

If the cwm was installed by oem, . . . . . . . .

That is out of question - the OEM does not install CWM . . . . . . . . . period.

So there is no way I can backup my current OEM ROM without rooting?

Without a custom recovery it's not possible to have a "proper" stock/oem backup. Root or not doesn't matter.

mobileGo can only backup your data like contacts and those things not the rom.

And how to do custom recovery to backup the stock ROM?

Flash it (fastboot mode), even if your phone isn't rooted. You can then actually then install the super su from the recovery itself.

It works both way, if you root you can use something like flashify to flash the recovery, but this won't work for locked bootloaders or s-on device hence the need to flash the recovery first, then root it.

Edit- Just a random example, in case you still doubt these words http://nexus5.wonderhowto.com/forum/install-custom-recovery-without-root-nexus-5-0159035/

rudrax, please try the above (fastboot mode) recommendation - wish you all the very best (you'll need it.) g4ZwQYe.gif

Most curious:

snap pea can do back ups ...only requirement is to have your phone in debug mode in order to use snap pea....

And so am I. so I looked, and found=>

https://snappea.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/201062417-Does-SnapPea-backup-app-data-and-settings-

https://snappea.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/201061457--Official-Backup-and-Restore-Your-Phone-with-SnapPea

And here:

http://alternativeto.net/software/snappea/

Curiously - it says it has been discontinued ??

AirDroid is also very popular - but I found it to also be very limited in what it can do.

There are a few things which claim to manage Android via PC and of the lot I've had best results with My Phone Explorer.

It is freeware - very light on resource usage, and does alot of stuff very well - but NOT total backup.

BTW, there's a good list of alternatives, here:

Best Wishes.

So I found this for your phone.

http://www.asus-zenfone.com/2015/04/twrp-philz-recovery-zenfone-5.html

After installing the intel drivers for your phone, you may also need the adb drivers(in case you encounter some errors) which can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979

Once you have installed the recovery, you can backup your current stock rom.

Phew, so you decided to root your device - glad that good sense prevails . . . . . . . . . . finally! F3h9xqz.gif

Please do not use the root feature on Wondershare MobileGo - it is just a half measure like attempting a custom recovery without rooting. f62d0v2.gif

Wondershare MobileGo was suggested to a stubborn person who insisted on a backup requirement without rooting his device - it was never offered as a rooting solution. h3uXN07.gif

Wondershare MobileGo is a very useful and convenient program which I use, myself - despite having full-blooded root on my device. I find it easier to make edits across the thousands of multi-structured fields on my contacts, identify duplication of numbers (in batch,) send high volumes of text messages when personalization is required or even when customization of content is the need of the hour. It brings me the possibility of backing-up my apps. with all their complex configurations on a safer storage media - the HDD on my Desktop Tower; separate from my device - your custom recovery becomes useless if your device is stolen. Wondershare MobileGo permits restore - individually, selectively or even completely. It allows me indexing & filing ease for my data and also every conceivable media . . . . . . . . etc., etc (hmm - was I sounding like a sales rep., for Wondershare?) :P

What Wondershare MobileGo can also do, but not as per our highest expectation, is to root your device - you need to employ a full-blooded rooting solution, instead.

What Wondershare MobileGo cannot do is displace a custom recovery - we need both forms (personally, I use an additional - third layer.) B)

Yes! The very same one which I linked-up many moons ago, via PM - a full-blooded root ensures root privileges across all binaries.

For custom recovery, I suggest TWRP (Touch) instead of CWM and as for SuperSU, suggest the flash version at post # 2431 instead of the installation one.

What's the backup plan if the rooting process goes wrong?
