LeetPirate
Hey comrads, I need some advice please. I need to know what you guys think it the best option for implementing a forum within a joomla site. Security and stability are among my 2 most important requirements of course. I already have the fireboard extension for Joomla but I would like to know your opinions, suggestions, or other comments please. Right now I am leaning towards an independent forum package on a sub folder or sub domain. Please any advice you may have I would greatly appreciate. Oh yea and my preference for forum packages would be free open source ones since I can't afford paid versions.Thanks.
Administrator Lite Posted June 24, 2009 Administrator Share Posted June 24, 2009 A dedicated forum package is the way to go. The features and scalability of separate package is better than the modules available for the CMS. That said its possible to "wrap" the forums under your CMS.For free forum software i recommend you check out PHPBB and SMF.
rashad
You can integrate Joomla with other forums engine like phpBB,vBulletin or SMF using JFusion
LeetPirate
After hours of research I had narrowed down the comparison to FUDforum, MyBB, NextBBS, Phorum, phpBB, SMF, XMB. but all that reading was so tedios, lol I am glad you suggested SMF or phpBB because my host had those 2 ready to install via the fantastico system so I didn't have to manually upload anything. I think I will pick SMF because I like that it has support for rss and post rating system. One thing that came up while I was reading was the ability to have spaces in member names. I don't know yet whether SMF supports it but it isn't extremely important anyway.I will use the wrapper function for until I read up on how to use the Jfusion. At first glance it looks extremely promising so I will definitely spend some time on trying to get it working. Thanks for the advice. It is greatly appreciated!
LeetPirate
Ok I have tested out a few things and I got everything working so far, the fusing worked as well. I have a question though. Since the forum will be integrated with the website, is it a good idea to use the same sql database for the cms and the forum? I don't really know the pros and cons of that idea but I do know that I can use the same sql database for multiple cms or forums just by configuring each to use a unique prefix. What should I do? Administrator Lite Posted June 26, 2009 Administrator Share Posted June 26, 2009 It shouldn't make much of a difference. I prefer to use seperate databases.
rashad
I'd say different DBs for management purposes, it'll make things easier to handle, backup, restore...
LeetPirate
Thanks again for the great advice. It is already using 2 separate DBs from the default config so I will leave it as it is.Thanks.
