Ballistic Gelatin
I've been using Nuance OmniPage Professional 18 for several years now. Very easy to use once you understand the basics of manipulating text and images within the program.
Chancer
I use the OCR built into MS Office. They stopped including it after Office 2010 but you can load the 2010 version standalone and use it with Office 2013 - which is what I do.For PDFs I let acrobat use the built in capability.https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/982760

Very easy to use once you understand the basics of manipulating text and images within the program. So what about the results ? is it more accurate? It's the only OCR application I've ever used (since OmniPage Pro Eight), so I can't honestly say whether it's more accurate than its competitors. Each iteration of the product has claimed improved accuracy over the previous version, and I have no reason to doubt those claims. I would install OmniPage Pro 18 and another competing software to judge for yourself.

child
There are lots of OCR software and services available nowadays... but no one alone do all jobs 100%.In Old days I use Scansoft OmniPage (Now it is Nauance OmniPage after accruing it by Naunce and they more target on Voice recognition instead of OCR) and now we use AbbyyFine Reader. Here is the list of some good OCRs.ABBYY FineReader (Preferred Corporate version)OmniPageFreeOCRReadIRIS (specially for Arabic type language OCR)SimpleOCRTypeReaderFor simple OCR without formatting use SimpleOCR and Tesseract-OCR (An OCR Engine that was developed at HP Labs between 1985 and 1995... and now at Google). Here are some links for OCR Business/Job/Tips:What is the most accurate OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software?OCR Accuracy Measurement MUST READ..!!!Improving OCR Accuracy in Your Scanned Files with DocuFiAnalysing and Improving OCR Accuracy in Large Scale Historic Newspaper Digitisation ProgramsComparison of optical character recognition softwareInclude:OCR engines, that do the actual character identificationLayout analysis software, that divide scanned documents into zones suitable for OCRGraphical interfaces to one or more OCR enginesSoftware development kits that are used to add OCR capabilities to other software (e.g. forms processing applications, document imaging management systems, e-discovery systems, records management solutions)Best Practices for Optical Character RecognitionSome more links to read:OCR - Optimal Image ResolutionOCR TechnologyOCR FeaturesDocument/Layout Analysis for OCRIn short, For accurate result you should follow some pattern like:Font size: 8 and above.Resolution: 300dpi and above. Odd Ramos
I‘ve tested portable versions of Adobe Acrobat Pro DC v15, Foxit Phantom PDF v7.1.3, Nitro PDF, PDF-XChange, Nuance OmniPage v18, ABBYY FineReader v12 for OCR capabilities to make a searchable English language .pdf file from non searchable .pdf file and ABBYY FineReader v12 was the most accurate and very easy to work with.Somebody said that Foxit Phantom PDF was using ABBYY OCR engine, however ABBYY FineReader v12 was more accurate, placed the searchable text behind the original .pdf file in the right places and recognized more text than Foxit PhantomPDF.ABBYY FineReader Corporate v12.0.101.388:http://www.nsaneforums.com/topic/228636-abbyy-finereader-120101388-corporate-edition-repack-by-dakov/?hl=abbyy
