Abbott government to announce anti-vaccination parents will lose benefits

Parents who do not vaccinate their children will lose welfare payments of up to $2100 per child under a federal government policy set to be announced before the May budget.

Under changes that could save more than $50 million a year, Social Services Minister Scott Morrison is preparing to scrap a "conscientious objection" provision which allows anti-vaccination parents to still claim welfare benefits including childcare assistance and Family Tax Benefit A.

Fairfax Media understands the Family Tax Benefit A is worth up to $2100 per child.

Parents of about 39,000 children have signed "conscientious objection" forms that certify they have a "personal, philosophical, religious or medical" objection to immunisation. This form, which requires a consultation with a doctor or immunisation nurse, is necessary for the parents to receive Family Tax Benfit A. But access is means tested so not every one of those parents would be receiving the payment.

While the change has been discussed as a future budget measure, Fairfax Media understands an announcement is imminent.

Many pro-vaccination groups and doctors are expected to welcome the policy as a way of further encouraging people to vaccinate their children, but other immunisation policy experts argue it would not lift immunisation rates and would discourage discussions about vaccination with doctors.

The policy comes amid rising concern about whooping cough deaths and fears of disease outbreaks in some parts of Australia where many unvaccinated children live in small communities.

Mr Morrison believes proper immunisation of children against severe diseases protects them and other children from deadly diseases and as such should be a prerequisite for receiving taxpayer assistance. He said the rules need to be tightened.

Earlier this week, Mr Morrison said the current exemptions for access to welfare payments "clearly need to be tightened".

"We've got to think about the health and wellbeing of all the other children that are put at risk, and it's their health that also matters," he said.

"And in fact, you know, those parents have taken decisions to immunise their children, and that's obviously the sensible thing to do. We're a free country, and we're for free society, but that doesn't mean you get to take taxpayers' money if you don't want to go along with the rules."

I remember my parents talking about Measles and Mumps, and they said it was gone forever because of mandatory shots by 1st Grade.

I guess not, because the kids who don't get the shots, they grow up, go to the college dorms, and that stuff spreads like airborne AIDS would.

We've also got Whooping Cough going around, something I thought was a 3rd World disease.

Ive had a lot of vaccines in my time with no ill affects but i have seen some ppl have not so good reactions to them.Theres alot of conspiricy theorys that the new world order is putting cancer in them ect that is scareing ppl.But in the end it should be a choice I think not forced.

Why bother putting cancer in the vaccines, when EVERYTHING in the grocery store is terrible for you in one way or another?

Anyway, It isn't forced, they just aren't going to foot the bill for the costs. Sure it might feel forced if you are broke though. It is sort of like your insurance going up if you are prone to crashes.

I know people personally in my own family who took vaccinations and were harmed from them.

Let’s have a look at what GlaxoSmithKline says inside thier own Polio vaccinations insert under the name of KINRIX (their brand name for the Polio vaccine)

This indicates that the vaccine CAN give you Guillain-Barre which can paralyze a person. INFANRIX is the other name GlaxoSmithKilne uses for thier vaccine. What else does the vaccine say it does as for adverse reactions go:

So that sounds lovely right? That's just the Polio vaccine that GlaxoSmithKline created, go have a look at the "Inserts of drug vaccines" which contain a lot of info that you as a parent may want to view before getting your children vaccinated. The fact sheet alone is not enough, request at the Pharmacy the next time you should visit SPECIFICALLY for the drug insert pamphlet, they normally don't give them out because people rarely ask for them.

so how many have issues with ALL vaccines compared to the amount of lives saved..... one is miniscule one is a very large number.... here is a hint... the lives saved is not the miniscule number....and once again you bastardized and totally misinterpreted or worse, misrepresented the papers you are quoting... i have two doctors in my family and they routinely run into parents spouting off misinformation about vaccines and the risks and the bad thing is they ARE putting their children at risk by listening to false and exaggerated claims of a.......... trying to scam them for money...having a quadruple bypass or your appendix or gallbladder removed OR simply taking an aspirin all have inherent risks also.... and you do see too many idiots refusing the medications or operations even there are many who feel they do not need such medical intervention
