Kevin Bollaert, the 28-year-old convicted of operating the “revenge porn” website UGotPosted.com, was sentenced on Friday to 18 years behind bars.

Bollaert, of San Diego, was also convicted in February on several counts of identity theft and extortion. His website allowed people to submit nude photos of their ex-partners—mainly women—accompanied by the victim's name, age, and a Facebook profile link.

The photos were uploaded without the consent of the victims, and those who wanted their photos and information removed from the site were charged up to $350. Bollaert apparently made thousands of dollars from the website. Many of the victims received harassing messages online as a result of their photos and personal information being posted on the site.

During his sentencing on Friday, Bollaert “burst into tears” after hearing testimony from his family and some of the victims, according to NBC San Diego.

Several of the women who testified during the trial made statements during Friday’s sentencing in San Diego and explained to Judge David Gill how appearing on the website had a deep impact on their lives, reported the UT San Diego.

One woman told the judge that she was kicked out of her house by her parents and is now homeless.

"This has been a daily struggle to get my life back together," another woman told the judge.

Bollaert will be allowed to serve his sentence in a county jail instead of a prison, because he is a nonviolent offender, according to the UT San Diego. The Los Angeles Times reported that he was also ordered to pay $15,000 in restitution to the victims of the website, as well as a $10,000 fine.

In a statement on Friday, Attorney General Kamala Harris said "there will be severe consequences" for those who make money from exploiting people online.

"Sitting behind a computer, committing what is essentially a cowardly and criminal act will not shield predators from the law or jail,"

she stated. "We will continue to be vigilant and investigate and prosecute those who commit these deplorable acts.”

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned...

i saw this guy on a news program shortly before he was charged and he had no scruples nor remorse for what he had done and even refused to take down the pictures after ransoms were paid...the guy would not have gotten such a large jail time if hd not gone with this attitude of "you cannot do anything to me because i do not recognize your power " once he had to deal with the police and the rest of the legal system...clearly it was long time he got sentenced to but then again he kind of asked for it....and i can quite imagine he has also refused to pay any restitution...once he does most likely he will get out for time served.there is way more to this story than what little has been reported here

what do you mean by OK?? hopefully not ok that he was doing what he did..in my mind the assholes got what he deserved and the men involved that sent in the pictures need their nuts in vise with women in the pics and videos in control of the vise

Why did he get 18 years? You can get less for murder. I know he'll probably do half only but it seems a very long stretch for the crime.

If he showed no remorse whatsoever, and was made an example of it still seems a very big sentance.

as i said above...the guy showed no remorse and has refused to pay restitution... time will be cut back substantially when he sees his errors in life... after all as you said bigger scum get lighter sentences

I think this sentence is ridiculous for what "crime" he has supposed to have commited which as far as I can tell here is only extortion. Posting private pics of girls on internet is not a crime (At least in US and UK) as long as they have permission of at least one of the parties who took part in taking of the pictures. Same as ex-lovers can sell celebrity sex tapes.

when combined with extortion it is in no way shape or form legal yes 18 years is a long sentence but combined with the guys attitude before during and after he is getting what he deserves

In the Netherlands you could be convicted for a double murder and get sentenced less time, which is also automatically reduced to 2/3rds of the time

This guy does deserve some time, but a sentence of 18 years??? That ain't reasonable, if you ask me. (a decade wih good behaviour). Murderers or rapists are free, before he is. A sentence of 3-5 years at most would have been justice.

The extortion of the girls probably made the sentence so 'crazy' and they also want to frighten copycats like myex, theporndude,... Kevin was just blindsighted by the easy money. He was making a living ($30.000+) with his scam site + thought he was safe on the internet.

Even with a nationwide revenge porn law, this won't help much, since guys share their ex-GF's private selfies in a state of 'rage', but at least the girls can take them to court now. The damage has been done though and once your private shots are uploaded online, good luck trying to get them all down.

In my opinion, schools should do more about prevention. How about warning young students about the dangers of 'revenge porn' in sex education class?
