DIY VPN ?

Recently there have been several offers for lifetime unlimited VPN access for a mere $39.

I have a problem with anything that boasts of both lifetime AND unlimited together - and frankly I seldom have any $$ to spare.

Here's links to sites offering this as examples:
http://www.droid-life.com/2015/03/06/deal-vpn-unlimited-lifetime-subscription-just-39/

https://deals.thewindowsclub.com/sales/vpn-unlimited-lifetime-subscription

(I have no connection with either site; just happened to read 'em is all.)

In the comments under the offer in the 1st link there is this:

Bernie

I’ve been using my own home grown VPN for years. If you are any kind of a geek and want to spend $35.00 on a Raspberry Pi you can have one up and running in less than an hour.

So I looked a bit and found lots of different DIY projects using a Raspberry Pi to make one's own VPN.

One example of a how-to is here:
http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=81657

Now I am curious...

If I were to spend any $ for a VPN, I'd rather trust my own un-logged VPN then some who-knows-what someplace on the planet which could dry up & blow away with zero warning - or worse still - keep really good logs which defeat the whole idea anyhow, no matter what they claim NOT to do.

My query:

Is anyone here using their own home-made Raspberry Pi VPN ??

Thanks.

Well, this is pretty interesting stuff...might be worth investigating and perhaps experimenting with.

Of course, Hillary Clinton thought she knew what she was doing when it comes to configuring 'private' servers and such.

I think there may be a little confusion here.

The VPN service many sites offer is to allow you to connect from your PC through a vpn service to a remote server, usually anonymous.

The raspberry pi project is to allow you to set up a vpn server at home so you can access your home system via a vpn from elsewhere.

If you want to do the latter it is built into Windows and not hard to setup.

Totally different situations, i agree.

To stretch this idea...:

Using the above example to acquire anonymity would merely require the Pi to make connection through a proxy server, yes ??

Further examples found by simply searching on ' Raspberry Pi anonymous vpn ':

So my question remains - is anyone around here doing something cool like this with a Raspberry Pi ??

Thanks.
