Problem: LAN cable not detected

Hello guys,

My cousin recently bought new computer and we have a really strange issue.

We live in the same house, different floors, so we share Internet connection. Router is on my floor. Lan cable is going through the wall to his floor. Now the strange thing.

His lan cable is working fine on laptop and his old computer, but not on the new computer. But, when we bring the new computer on my floor and try my lan cable his new computer can detect it. I double checked the cable and it's straight-through lan cable.

Any idea what's happening here?

Cheers ;)

Have you connected the cable going thru the wall directly into the modem to see if it will work? Who knows it could be an issue with your router.

In Ethernet properties > configure > advanced > speed & Duplex try to make it "10 Mbps half duplex" see if it will work, if this works then the cable have a problem that's why it don't work on 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps, you need then to try to change the Connector or the cable it self

If it didn't work try to update the lan driver and also try to look at the Ethernet slot at the computer and see if some pins damaged or something like that

Also if you have a tester device try to test your cable, it's numbers from 1 to 8, "1,2,3,6" must be working or the cable will not work

Sorry i don't know how to explain what i mean correctly

Hm, that's not possible, because modem is in another room. I doubt it's the router, since every other computer works fine. Even his, but on my cable. I tried changing ports.

Try this ,check in bios for lan option to detect cable length, my gigabyte has this.

I briefly went through options in bios before posting here, and didn't see that option, but I'll check it again.

Lan driver is updated. I don't have a cable tester, but this cable works on the old computer and on laptop, but not on new computer, and new computer works on mine cable. And we tried changing connectors. Nothing is damaged. I'll check out that option.

This is really strange. I used Realtek diagnostic tool and it shows 3 pairs as open and one pair as short, meaning the cable is bad. But it does not make sense how this cable works on other computers.

Did you try to make it 10 half ?

Yes, but no change. I managed to get it once somehow to show limited connection, and orange led was blinking, but I can't make it like that again.

i think there's a problem in this cable somewhere inside the wall if you can get it out and check it you will see something somewhere if you can't get it out, change it

Let me know what happen when you change it just for the info

And also i want to ask strange questions

1- how much time you been using this cable

2- Is the weather there cold

I' ll let you know. We are using this cable for years, at least 6 or 7. Currently it's winter, so yes, it is cold, but not in the house. Why that matters?

In my work i deal with alot of cable problems and this strange problem happen with me alot

That i have a cable problem that stop working at night when it's too cold and then start to work at day when weather become better and when you check the cable it self you will not find any kind of problems or damage

So i think it's cable life

I agree with the cable being the problem I would have made one up and swapped it out long ago, if you can't do that they are very cheap on ebay

Yeah, it was the cable, but this was really strange behaviour. Before we bought new cable, we borrowed LAN card from other cousin. And it worked fine and Realtek diagnostic showed cable as normal, but transfer speed between PC's was terrible, and after few hours that card throw limited connection and stopped working.

Now, with the new cable, everything works fine.

Thanks everyone.

Cheers ;)

Glad you got it worked out mara. My bro ended up getting a high end cable for his apartment and his internet speeds boost.
