Here are your new Ghostbusters arriving July 2016

While Dan Aykroyd struggled valiantly for years to will a third Ghostbusters movie into existence, fate and Bill Murray’s apathy decided it was not to be. But now a new Ghostbusters is gaining life, and on Twitter director Paul Feig has just revealed the cast for the modern, all-female team coming next summer.

Kristen Wiig. Melissa McCarthy. Leslie Jones. Kate McKinnon. Those are the new names you’ll be calling when there’s something strange in your neighborhood. Considering Paul Feig’s previous films, this isn’t too surprising. He worked with both Wiig and McCarthy in the 2011 comedy hit Bridesmaids and continued casting McCarthy in movies like The Heat and the upcoming Spy. Meanwhile, Jones and McKinnon are both currently on Saturday Night Live, where Wiig along with original Ghostbusters Aykroyd, Murray, and the late Harold Ramis also got their start. When making a change as radical as this, it’s good to see some traditions still go one.

Unfortunately, the very existence of a Ghostbusters reboot has led to some sad, predictable anger from certain dark corners of fandom incensed by even the slightest alterations to their beloved obsessions. The fact that it’s women-led only adds an extra layer of ugliness to the outrage. But the fact is, this is a strong, hilarious cast, and if you’re going to try to live up to a legacy as powerful and long-lasting as Ghostbusters, you have to be willing to take some risky creative chances.

Feig also announced the film’s July 22, 2016 release date. Filming is expected to happen later this year now that the cast is in place. Maybe they’ll finally get Rick Moranis to come out of acting retirement?
